Josué Ángel Leal was sentenced to life imprisonment in Texas, for being responsible for the beating murder of Kevin A. Bartlett at his home. The Harris County District Attorney, in Houston, revealed that Leal heard his sentence on Thursday afternoon, July 1, 2021, after five days of trial.

Judge Josh Hill of the Harris County 232 Criminal District Court read his sentence to Josué Ángel Leal after he was found guilty and informed him that he will never have the right to leave even if he shows good behaviour in prison. Leal, 26, will only be released from prison after he has died.

Kevin A. Bartlett was a veteran soldier in the United States Army who had served in combat during the First Gulf War, in the First Infantry Division. Bartlett often opened his home to people who needed a place to live.

Many homeless in the city of Houston, Texas still remember him today for his generosity and solidarity in providing shelter in times of need, allowing them to live in one of the rooms of his house located at 12007 Chelsea Elm Court, northwest of the metropolitan area. .

One of those people who asked Bartlett for help was Josué Ángel to allow him to stay in his house with his girlfriend Chrissie Owens, since they had nowhere to live in November 2015. Owens and Leal went in and out of the Kevin A. Bartlett’s home for several weeks in November through December.

The mother of Chrissie Owens, whose name will not be revealed in this story to protect her identity, knew that the girl was staying with her boyfriend Leal at the home of Kevin A. Bartlett. What the woman also knew was that Leal frequently beat up her daughter Chrissie. The woman even saw one of those beatings.

On the cold Thursday, December 10, 2015, Chrissie Owens’ mother went to Kevin A. Bartlett’s house to see that everything was fine with her daughter, given the stormy relationship she had with Josué Ángel. The woman came to the house, knocked on the door and no one opened it. When the first HCSO patrols arrived at Kevin A. Bartlett’s home, they broke in to help the veteran soldier who was sprawled on the ground. However, when they searched the body, they could no longer do anything to save his life and he was declared dead at the scene. The house appeared to have been the scene of a violent fight.

Then the agents of the Homicide Division of the HCSO appeared on the scene to carry out the first investigations into the death of veteran Kevin A. Bartlett. The agents noticed in the pool of blood that there were prints of sports shoes, of which the forensic experts took several photographs. Those fingerprints were crucial to solving the case.

Tracks from athletic shoes had left a trail of blood inside Kevin A. Bartlett’s home in the kitchen and bedroom. Based on this, the agents were able to determine that the owner of the sports shoes, later identified as Josué Ángel, had taken his time going around the house to loot it.

During the autopsy on the body of Kevin A. Bartlett, medical examiners determined that the man died from a beating that caused serious internal injuries. Based on these injuries, the agents even learned that the veteran and generous soldier had been kicked in the head, with his sports shoes, when he was already lying on the ground.

Officers from the HCSO Homicide Division, upon searching the home, discovered that Kevin A. Bartlett’s car was missing from the garage. In the testimony of Chrissie Owens’ mother, the woman revealed the name of the girl’s boyfriend, Josué Ángel, who had brought her to live there thanks to the kindness of the veteran.

In her testimony, the woman also revealed Leal’s violent and volatile character. Agents, upon reviewing the boy’s background, discovered that he had at least one prior arrest charged with violent robbery. That set off alarms for investigators with the HCSO’s Homicide Division.

Leal then forced his girlfriend Chrissie Owens into Kevin A. Bartlett’s car and they escaped to Montgomery County, north of Houston. On Friday, December 11, 2015, a force of elite agents of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) spotted Kevin A. Bartlett’s car at a mall. Josué Ángel was inside the vehicle and they stopped him without resistance and handed him over to his colleagues from the HCSO.
