Juan Valentine Rodríguez and Iván Valenzuela went to a party in Magna, Utah, and were shot to death. The Salt Lake City Unified Police Department (UPDSL) is still investigating the double homicide for which no one has yet been arrested. At the tragic scene there was also a wounded girl.

The city of Magna, Utah, is a small town located in the southwestern metropolitan area of Salt Lake City and on the way towards the famous Salt Lake next to which the city was founded in the 19th century. The murder of the young Juan Valentine Rodríguez, 19, and Iván Valenzuela, 18, has caused deep pain in the Hispanic community.

According to the incident report, consulted by MundoHispánicoLast Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 1:00 in the morning, the UPDSL emergency number received a call that alerted them of a large shooting at a house in Magna, Utah, in which several boys were gathered. The reason for the meeting has not been revealed.

The first officers arrived at the scene of the shooting at 1:10 a.m. at the house marked 3623 South Evening Light Cove in Magna, Utah, a cul de sac, with houses of upper-middle-class families and behind the Elk Run Elementary School. In the house the agents found a scene of chaos and death.

Inside the house the agents found two boys shot to death and who were identified as Juan Valentine Rodríguez and Iván Valenzuela. A girl was also wounded by the gunshots and UPDSL patrols called for the help of paramedics to attend to the young woman.

The girl’s name is not on the case documents to protect her identity. The girl was transferred to a hospital by paramedics from the Salt Lake City Fire Department (SLCFD, for its acronym in English). At the time of writing this story, the girl is already in stable condition.

After the bodies of the young men of Iván Valenzuela and Juan Valentine Rodríguez were found, the case was turned over to the UPDSL Homicide Division agents to initiate investigations into the double murder. So far the investigations remain open and the motive for the crime has not been revealed.

However, what the Homicide Division agents do know is that moments before the shooting there was a party of several young people gathered when, suddenly, someone began shooting at Iván Valenzuela and Juan Valentine Rodríguez and the girl who was injured.

What they have not revealed so far is whether the alleged murderers of Iván Valenzuela and Juan Valentine Rodríguez were also other young people attending the party or if they later arrived at the scene with the intention of committing the crime against the three boys.

The UPDSL explained that they will not reveal anything more about the case while the investigations remain open. So far, the Homicide Division agents have not revealed whether they have already identified the alleged shooters. It is also not known if the boys’ party was supervised by someone over 21 as required by law.

The authorities ask for help from the community

The party at the house was packed with other boys who gave their statements to the UPDSL Homicide Division agents. However, the corporation asks the Hispanic community that if anyone knows details of the double murder to contact 801.743.7000. All tracks will be kept anonymous.

Magna, Utah, is a population of just 27,000 inhabitants according to the United States Census Bureau. However, the presence of Hispanics in the area has grown exponentially in recent years and according to the government, 25 out of every 100 inhabitants are Hispanic and many of them are immigrants or the children of immigrants.

The brutal murder of the young Juan Valentine Rodríguez and Iván Valenzuela has shaken the Hispanic community of Magna, Utah, because the crime was committed before the eyes of dozens of other boys who attended what they thought would be a night of party and fun.

So far, agents from the UPDSL Homicide Division have not revealed whether moments before the shooting there was an incident that caused the attack on Juan Valentine Rodríguez and Iván Valenzuela. What is known is that the two murdered boys were friends with each other.

Luis Ángel Valenzuela Salazar, brother of Iván Valenzuela, opened the account Funeral Expenses (Funeral expenses) in the economic solidarity network Go Fund Me to ask for help to cover the expenses caused by the tragic murder of the boy.

“My family and I are creating this… for the funeral expenses of my brother who passed away unexpectedly. We want to give Iván Valenzuela the farewell he deserves, honor his memory and give him our last goodbye. Any help will be greatly appreciated… please keep us in your prayers ”wrote the victim’s brother.

For her part, Itzel Martínez, cousin of the young Juan Valentine Rodríguez, opened the account Help Us Get A Proper Burial For My Cousin (Help us to have a proper funeral for my cousin) also in the social network Go Fund Me to request solidarity economic support from the community.

“My cousin was injured and killed… please help us with whatever you can, any help for Iván and his family will be appreciated. He did not deserve this… he was a funny boy, who liked to make others laugh, worried about others, his smile could illuminate a room when he entered ”wrote Itzel Martínez when remembering Juan Valentine Rodríguez.
