Pride Month is a reminder to erase prejudice and accept people as they are — unique. Often marginalized, the modern gay rights movement has made incredible strides in recent decades. So here’s what you need to know about Gay Pride Month!

HOW DID THE MOVEMENT START?

The movement gained strength with the Stonewall uprising in June 1969 in New York City. This helped galvanize the struggle for gay rights, which have already been recognized in many parts of the world.

Currently, in various parts of the United States, Mexico and other nations, gay marriage had been legal for some time. This was unheard of in the sixties. It’s proof that Stonewall was the start of a new era.

WHAT DOES LGBTQ MEAN?

LGBTQ stands for: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. However, many heterosexual people also celebrate Gay Pride. The movement is about inclusion no matter what your sexual orientation.

The celebration takes place all over the world, but there is no specific day. Pride events were canceled in many places due to the Covid pandemic but, after two years, they are planning to celebrate in many places around the world. Once again, they will fill the streets with color!

The LGBTQ community has already set a date and time to hold the Pride March, in Mexico City, after two years of the pandemic. And now they have organized marches in other parts of the country too.

The march commemorates June 28, 1969, when police in New York City carried out a raid to arrest and intimidate gay patrons at a bar called the Stonewall Inn. From that moment, the LGBTT community has carried out marches and protests around the world. Filed Under: Gay Pride Month
