  • The United States extended the mask mandate for public transit by two weeks.
  • Those traveling on planes, trains or any means of public transport will have to wear a mask at least until the beginning of May.
  • The measure is intended to slow the spread of Covid-19 as officials monitor a possible new surge.

The Biden administration has announced that they will extend the national order that requires the use of a mask on public transit for two weeks while monitoring a significant increase in COVID-19 cases around the country, according to The Associated Press.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said they were extending the order, which was due to expire on April 18, until May 3 to allow more time to study the Omicron BA.2 subvariant that is now responsible for the vast majority of new cases in the country.

“In order to assess the potential impact the rise of cases has on severe disease, including hospitalizations and deaths, and health care system capacity, the CDC order will remain in place at this time,” the agency said in a statement.

When the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), charged with maintaining safety on planes, buses, trains and their respective stations, extended the requirement last month, it said the CDC hoped to come up with a looser strategy to replace the national order.

The mask requirement for public transit is the most visible vestige of the remaining Covid restrictions and possibly the most controversial. The recent rise in abusive, and sometimes violent incidents, on airplanes has been attributed to disputes over mask wearing.

Critics of the measure say states have rolled back rules requiring masks to be worn in restaurants, stores and other venues as COVID-19 cases have fallen after the peak of the Omicron surge in mid-January, The Associated Press reported. There has been a slight increase in cases in recent weeks, driven by a highly contagious sub-variant of the Omicron strain, with the national figure rising from 25,000 to more than 30,000 daily cases. The true number may be much higher, as many people are using at-home antigen tests and don’t report the results to local health departments.

Serious cases and deaths usually lag infections by a few weeks. The CDC is awaiting indications of whether the increase in cases correlates with an increase in serious outcomes before relaxing the rule on the use of masks on public transportation.
