A few minutes earlier, President Trump had reported that he and his wife Melania are awaiting their own coronavirus test results, after one of his advisers with whom he spent considerable time this week tested positive for COVID-19.

“If we quarantine ourselves or if we have it, I don’t know,” Trump had during a telephone interview with Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity on Thursday night. “I just took a test and we’ll see what happens.”

Trump made the remarks following news that Hope Hicks, one of his closest advisers, tested positive for the coronavirus after spending time around him this week.

Hicks, who serves as Trump’s adviser and traveled with him to a rally Wednesday, tested positive Thursday, according to an administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private medical information. She is the highest-ranking White House official to test positive so far.

Trump said he expected to receive the results Thursday night or Friday morning.

The White House had not previously responded to multiple questions about the last time Trump was tested.

Trump traveled to New Jersey on Thursday for a fundraiser. His social media director, Dan Scavino, and press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, who were originally scheduled to join him on the trip, were replaced at the last minute by other assistants.

Hope Hicks’ positive test is another reminder that the virus continues to spread, even as Trump has desperately tried to pretend he no longer poses a danger, according to The Associated Press.

From the beginning, the President, the White House and his campaign have downplayed the threat and refused to abide by basic public health guidelines, including those issued by his own administration, such as wearing face masks in public and practicing social distancing.

Instead, Trump has continued to hold campaign rallies that draw thousands of supporters. The virus has killed more than 200,000 Americans and infected more than seven million across the country.

In a statement, White House spokesman Judd Deere said the president “takes the health and safety of himself and all who work to support him and the American people very seriously.”

“White House operations collaborate with the President’s physician and the White House Military Office to ensure that all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices to limit exposure to COVID-19 in the as much as possible both in the complex and when the president is traveling, ”Deere said.

Hope Hicks traveled with the president several times this week, including aboard Marine One, the presidential helicopter, and Air Force One to a rally in Minnesota on Wednesday, and aboard Air Force One for the first presidential debate Tuesday for the night in Cleveland.

Hicks was seen without a mask at different times during these trips, as was Trump, who does not wear masks in public, according to the Efe Agency.

A White House spokesman, Judd Deere, said in a statement that did not directly refer to Hicks’ positive that “the president takes his health, that of everyone around him, and of the American people very seriously.” .

The White House also did not clarify when Trump was last tested for coronavirus.

Hope Hicks is the person closest to the president who has tested positive for coronavirus to date, although several officials in the White House have been infected previously, including Katie Miller, the spokeswoman for the vice president, Mike Pence, according to the Efe agency.

Hicks was the spokesperson for Trump’s presidential campaign in 2016 and after the arrival of the president to power, she joined as an official in the White House, where she held the position of Director of Communication, which she left in 2018.

In February of this year, however, the ruler brought her back to his team, this time as an advisor.

The United States is the country hardest hit by the pandemic with 7,276,938 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 207,771 deaths, according to the most recent data from Johns Hopkins University.
