After the heat and drought, authorities announce that thunderstorms and heavy rain are hitting Southern California. This weather is expected to continue through the weekend.
In California, no rain had fallen for several months, when suddenly on Friday it began to rain again. Now, the Los Angeles area has not seen the sun for a couple of days and in Riverside County they keep a flood watch.
Thunderstorms and heavy rain hit Southern California
Authorities announced that thunderstorms and rainy weather will continue throughout the weekend. “There is a possibility that thunderstorms will develop again this afternoon, focusing on the mountains. The main impacts will be heavy downpours with the risk of localized flash floods ”, reported this afternoon the National Weather Service of San Diego.
“A small possibility of thunderstorms again this afternoon / evening in the San Gabriel Mountains, Antelope Valley and San Gabriel Valley. Isolated dry lightning bolts and erratic wind gusts are possible ”, added experts from The Angels.
Lightning, rain and even hail
“Areas of thunderstorms are moving over coastal waters, including the San Pedro Channel towards Catalina Island. These storms produce frequent lightning, gusts of 30 knots or more, along with possible heavy downpours and small hail ”, indicated the authorities.
This weather has surprised all of Southern California which had been going through an intense spell of drought, heat and fires. Now, for example, local authorities have issued a flood watch for the Coachella Valley after a lot of water fell on Desert Hot Springs in Riverside County.
In the last hours, citizens reported through social networks about very heavy rains in Corona, in Riverside County, California. Heavy rains were also reported in Orange County, even leaving several streets flooded in the Tustin area.
Thunderstorms are quite unusual at this time of year, although it is not the first time that they occur, experts say, adding that for this Saturday and Sunday there is a high probability of more rain.
The match is suspended
This Friday, September 24, the baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves had to be delayed due to the rains. Coincidentally, this match had been postponed since July, when rains in Atlanta disrupted the game.
