Mexico and the United States will keep their borders closed for non-essential travel until March 21 due to the coronavirus, one year after the implementation of the measure, after agreeing to extend the restrictions for another month, according to Efe Agency.

“After reviewing the development of the spread of COVID-19 and due to the fact that various states are at the orange epidemiological traffic light (high risk of contagion), Mexico proposed to the United States the extension, for one more month, of the restrictions to non-essential land transit on their common border ”, the Ministry of Foreign Relations can read on Twitter.

As reported by the Mexican ministry, the restrictions, which were scheduled to end this month, “will remain in the same terms that have been developed since their implementation.”

They also stopped migratory processes in the American country, leaving, according to various NGOs, thousands of undocumented immigrants stranded on the northern Mexican border.

Those processes were resumed this Friday, after the order of the new US president, Joe biden, who took office as the new president on January 20.

The restrictions established have not prevented the commercial transit of food, fuel, medical care equipment and medicines across the border between the two countries.
