Texas continues to send buses of undocumented immigrants to Washington, DC

• Texas has sent 35 buses of undocumented migrants to Washington, DC in one month.
• This, in the face of Joe Biden’s decision to rescind the health regulation that allowed them to be immediately expelled due to the Covid-19 emergency.

Governor Greg Abbott reported that Texas has sent 35 buses of undocumented immigrants to Washington, DC in one month in response to the Biden administration’s decision to rescind the regulation that allowed them to be immediately expelled due to the Covid-19 health emergency, according to the EFE agency and Entre Líenas.

In a press release, the Republican governor of  Texas, Greg Abbott reported that he has sent 922 migrants in several buses to the United States capital since the transfers began in mid-April.

WHY IS ABBOTT SENDING MIGRANTS TO DC?

Friday, May 14 marked a month since Abbott ordered the Texas Division of Emergency Management to charter buses to transport migrants from border communities to Washington, DC as part of Operation Lone Star to bolster border security.

In his crusade against the administration of President Joe Biden, the governor, known for his ultra-conservative positions, launched a website at the end of April to accept donations from people who want to help transport undocumented immigrants.

ARE OTHER GOVERNORS JOINING IN?

Now, Arizona governor, Doug Ducey, has decided to emulate Abbott and sent the first bus with migrants from that state to the US capital this week. Unlike the transportation funding strategy employed by Texas, Ducey expects the Biden administration to foot the bill.

“This is a problem caused by Washington. We are bringing it to Washington, and we expect Washington (the Biden administration) to foot the bill. We’ll send them a bill,» Ducey’s spokesman, CJ Karamargin, told the Washington Examiner Thursday afternoon.

WHAT DO THEY DO WITH THE MIGRANTS?

All undocumented immigrants who are transported on the buses get on voluntarily. The migrants have been released by immigration authorities to continue their cases at large, say activists who have criticized the Texas governor’s actions.

The Biden administration has announced that enforcement of Title 42 will end on May 23 following the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but these states filed a lawsuit to prevent it.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE BORDER?

Texas, Arizona, and other conservative states are in a fight with the White House over Title 42. A federal judge in Louisiana heard the arguments of both parties on Friday and said he would make a decision before May 23 on whether the measure should or should not continue.
