Maricela Escobar was arrested in Texas accused

of running over and killing a teenage girl while she was driving while allegedly intoxicated.

Escobar, 37, was arrested by highway patrollers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS) in Edinburg, a city in the southeast of the state.

When the authorities detained Maricela Escobar, she told the authorities that she had indeed hit something when she was driving, but she assured them that it was a dog.

Liza Cavazos, 14, was hit by Maricela Escobar’s truck and died at the scene. Another boy who was with the girl was also beaten, but did not die and remains in hospital.

Maricela Escobar is already being held in the Hidalgo County Jail on charges of intoxication homicide and another assault with a deadly weapon, among others.

Texas criminal records, consulted by MundoHispánico, reveal that Maricela Escobar has been arrested on several previous occasions for driving under the influence (DWI, for its acronym in English).

Cavazos’ passing has filled the Hispanic community in southeast Texas with grief as the girl was a promising basketball star and high school student.

According to State Penal Code In Texas, the crime of homicide by intoxication, like the one Maricela Escobar faces, carries a sentence of 5 to 20 years in prison for anyone found guilty in a trial.

As of this writing, the defendant’s first hearing has not been determined.

On the night of Sunday, September 6, Liza Cavazos went out for a walk with her dog, accompanied by a friend. The friend’s name will not be revealed in this story.

The two boys were walking the dog on Owassa Road, between Tower Road and Valverde Road, in Colonia Arriaga, in an area where cars must go 30 miles per hour.

According to witnesses to the accident, a blue Chevrolet Tahoe truck suddenly appeared on the street speeding. Forensic reports estimate that he was going at least 50 miles per hour, and erratically on the road.

For some reason, without slowing down, the truck moved in and out of the center lane and headed toward the side of the street until at one point it hit Cavazos, his friend, and the dog.

After the impact, the truck did not stop and continued its mad race to the west without slowing down. The two boys were left lying next to the street, who could not avoid the blow.

Alerted by the cries for help and the blow, some neighbors went out to see what was happening and found the two boys injured. The dog was not injured.

A motorist who was passing by and saw the entire tragedy managed to mentally take details of the plates and characteristics of the Chevrolet Tahoe truck that caused the tragedy.

That attentive driver was the key to being able to arrest Maricela Escobar by the TxDPS patrols after the accident.

After the accident, the first patrol car to arrive ordered the two boys to be rushed to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries.

However, when the paramedics arrived at the site they could no longer do anything for the girl and she was pronounced dead right there. Her friend continues to recover from her injuries at an area hospital.

Meanwhile, thanks to the description provided by the motorist, an alert was issued for various corporations to search for the Chevrolet Tahoe truck that had caused the accident.

A TxDPS patrol officer making her rounds spotted the truck at the intersection of Earling Road and Tower Road.

According to the report, the officer stopped the woman who was driving the blue truck and interviewed the driver, who identified herself as Maricela Escobar, a resident of the same city of Edinburg.

The woman accepted that before getting in the car she had drunk several beers from a box of 12 and that she vaguely remembered running over a dog, but did not stop.

However, he clarified that after the impact he had no longer drunk anything and was already on his way home. The officer then decided to detain the woman, as she still had alcoholic breath and had difficulty communicating.

Criminal records in Texas detail that Maricela Escobar has been arrested in 2016, 2018, 2012 and 2011. For this last case, she was sentenced to spend 90 days in the Hidalgo County jail, the same where she is now accused of murder for intoxication and waiting to face his judgment.
