Texas: Kayla Longoria is charged with a violent robbery in Houston. Kayla Longoria was arrested for being the getaway driver in at least one violent robbery in Houston, Texas.

Longoria, 20, was captured by agents of the Robbery Division of the Houston Police Department (HPD, for its acronym in English) with two men he was helping to escape at full speed.

According to HPD, Longoria was the ‘designated driver’ by Vernon Scott and Dominique Simmons, two young African Americans, to drive them out of the places where they committed armed robberies.

The role of the Hispanic girl was to take safe routes out of the neighborhoods where the violent robberies, without attracting attention, but in a hurry, according to the accusation of the authorities.

Federal agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Arms and Explosives (ATF) assisted HPD in the arrest of the girl and her alleged accomplices due to the use of prohibited weapons.

Kayla Longoria faces serious charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and escaping arrest.

The girl faces her criminal trial before Judge Lori Chambers Gray of the 262 Criminal District Court in Harris County.

In the case documents, consulted by MundoHispánico In Texas, the plot in which the Hispanic girl allegedly participated along with the other two men is revealed.

So far it is not clear to the Robbery Division detectives how Longoria, a near-adolescent girl and fresh out of high school, became involved with the other two men who already have a long criminal record.

On Monday, April 6, 2020, a group of undercover agents from the HPD Crime Suppression Unit received information that an armed robbery had just been perpetrated in a Family Dollar Store in the northeast of the city.

The agents interviewed the store manager, whose name will not be revealed for their safety, who told them that moments before two African-American men, young and armed, had entered the business with weapons.

In her testimony, the woman assured that the two men pointed their pistols at her and after forcing her to empty all the money from the register, they ran out of the place to get into a car that was already waiting for them outside.

The testimonies of the victims indicated that in the car of the escape of the two thieves a girl who seemed Hispanic was driving.

Based on that statement and the videos from the surveillance cameras of the store, the agents of the Robbery Division and federal support mounted a sting operation in the area for weeks to detect the probable violent thieves and the car in the who were traveling.

Officers found it suspicious that a car similar to the one used in the store robbery was wandering erratically through various neighborhood businesses.

Without the girl and the two men noticing, several officers, in regular and undercover patrols, began to follow them closely.

When a superior officer gave the order they were detained, under the pretext of a lack of traffic, but after confirming that they could be the same armed robbers from the store.

However, the arrest was not going to be easy because the girl in the car noticed the maneuver of the HPD and ATF agents and sped up with the intention of getting lost in the intricate streets of the neighborhood.

Then there was a full-speed chase that culminated when several patrols and cars of undercover agents blocked the path of the suspect vehicle.

Agents were able to identify Vernon Scott and Dominique Simmons as the alleged perpetrators of the Family Dollar Store robbery. The two men were also linked to at least one other armed robbery in the area that occurred in March 2020.

Kayla Longoria was identified by officers as the alleged driver of the vehicle with which they escaped from the store in April.

Vernon Scott, 25, and Dominique Devon Simmons, 22, have long criminal records.

Scott, in addition to the new charge of aggravated robbery with a firearm, has a history of robbery, injuries to a minor, aggravated robbery, death threats to a custodian in jail, trespassing on private property, illegal possession of firearm and evade arrest.

For his part, Simmons has already been detained several times for home robbery, armed robbery at home, possession of a firearm, aggravated robbery, transfer to private property and even terrorist threats to a person in his family to intimidate him.

According to Harris County Criminal Records Kayla Longoria has no prior history until before her arrest for the armed robbery at the store.

Longoria, according to the HPD, did not point any weapon at anyone but because the driver of the car in which the two men escaped is accused of the same crimes.

Despite the seriousness of the accusation, Longoria was released after the payment of a bail of 20,000 thousand dollars that Judge Gray set for her.

Due to the delay caused by the coronavirus pandemic in the criminal courts of Harris County, the judge set the first hearing for Longoria until next Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

However, HPD authorities believe Longoria could be responsible for driving the vehicle Scott and Simmons used in other thefts. If someone from the Hispanic community in Houston recognizes it, ask them to call the non-profit organization Houston Crime Stoppers at 713.222.8477. All tracks will be kept anonymous.
