Looking for a job? Maybe this is great news for you: Target will hire 130,000 workers in the upcoming holidays.

As reported ABC7 This Saturday, Target is gearing up for the holiday season and looking to increase its team of workers.

The giant chain The retailer is announcing plans to hire 130,000 employees as it expects to see an increase in the contactless or online shopping method in the coming months.Target said it will double the number of team members dedicated to Drive-up and Pickup orders compared to last year, ABC7 said.

Target’s distribution centers will hire more workers per season.

There will also be additional employees at the front of the stores to focus on security, cleanliness and welcoming guests.

According to CNBC, Target CEO Brian Cornell said his approach to hiring and serving customers during the holidays will emphasize flexibility, a theme that all retailers have had to embrace as the pandemic shakes the way Americans shop.

He added that he expects “certain trends from earlier this year to continue through the Christmas season,” such as customers who want to feel safe in stores and are looking for good value for money.

“Certainly, we continue to see guests gravitate toward ease, convenience and contactless ways to shop through our digital channels,” Cornell noted, according to the CNBC review.

Early holiday forecasts anticipate that holiday sales will rise this year, but only slightly, as consumers face an uncertain economy or pull back due to the recession, CNBC explained.

Consulting firm Deloitte predicted that holiday sales could rise between 1% and 1.5% this year, but said it will depend on whether high-income consumers splurge and low-income families control their spending.

Cornell declined to provide an outlook for the typically busy shopping season. However, he said Target will make other changes related to the pandemic, such as starting holiday sales in October.

“We hope this is a very different holiday season. We hope that guests will start shopping earlier and shop throughout the season. We don’t expect long lines on Black Friday morning. But we certainly expect a very engaged consumer and Target guest who is eager to celebrate the holiday season, “Cornell said, according to CNBC.

Target’s director of human resources, Melissa Kremer, noted that current employees can earn extra hours and opt for tasks outside of their typical department, such as online order fulfillment. More than 90% of the retailer’s online orders are processed in stores.

The company’s total Christmas hires will look the same as last year, despite increased sales. Last year, Target hired 130,000 seasonal workers for the holidays, up from 120,000 workers in 2018.

More than 40 percent of those new hires stayed at Target after the holiday season ended, ABC7 said.

Target has seen a sales boom during the pandemic, particularly in the second quarter, which ended on August 1. It beat Wall Street expectations, hitting a record same-store sales growth of 24.3%. Its comparable digital sales nearly doubled, CNBC detailed.

Same-day delivery services, in particular, have boosted their sales during the pandemic.

Target offers three options: Shipt, an online home delivery service that can deliver groceries to customers’ homes; Drive Up, your curbside pickup service, and Pickup orders, your in-store pickup of ready-to-go purchases. Sales through services grew 273% year-on-year in the second quarter. Drive Up experienced the most marked growth: a 700% jump, said the aforementioned media.

Cornell attributed that growth to the different ways families spent money, as they were unable to go to the movies or the typical summer vacation. Some also discovered Target’s e-commerce options, he said.

Like other retailers, Target has seen a shift toward e-commerce. During the first half of fiscal 2020, more than 10 million new customers bought from its website. Demand for your same-day options, which are purchased online, quadrupled.
