The Mexican community in the United States has come together to appeal to President Biden to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Mexicans affected by Hurricane Otis.

This request specifically targets undocumented immigrants from Guerrero, Mexico, who were severely impacted by Hurricane Otis.

The hurricane wreaked havoc on the Mexican state, leaving a trail of destruction and chaos in its wake.

So far, the aftermath of this natural disaster in Guerrero includes 46 confirmed deaths and 58 still missing.

Organization ask Biden to grant TPS for Mexicans affected by Hurricane Otis

The Immigrant Rights Coalition, representing multiple organizations, has penned a letter to the U.S. government.

They urge Biden to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to individuals from Guerrero, citing historical protections granted to immigrants from other nations struck by natural disasters.

Juan José Gutiérrez, the director of the coalition, underscored that this situation meets all the criteria for extending TPS to undocumented residents of Guerrero currently in the United States.

He also emphasized that given Mexico’s constraints in delivering aid, the most effective way for residents of Guerrero to assist is by sending money back home.

Immigrants from Guerrero meet TPS eligibility requirements

Gutiérrez made the case that it’s crucial for these Mexicans, who significantly contribute to the United States economy, to be supported by being allowed to work legally.

Under current law, the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security is empowered to designate a foreign country for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) eligibility.

Such a designation is applicable if the conditions in that country fulfill the statutory requirements concerning ongoing armed conflicts, environmental disasters or other exceptional and temporary conditions.

These circumstances include such calamities as storms that would prevent its nationals from safely returning to their country of origin.

Mexico declares disaster after Hurricane Otis

Immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Haiti currently benefit from Temporary Protected Status (TPS) due to natural disasters that have struck their countries.

The petition to grant TPS for Mexicans who are undocumented residents from Guerrero in the United States is centered on the recent destruction wrought by Hurricane Otis in that Mexican state.

It’s noteworthy that the Mexican government has only just declared a disaster for 47 municipalities in Guerrero this past Thursday.

This declaration came more than a week after Hurricane Otis hit the region as a category 5 storm on October 25, according to EFE.

The presidents of Mexico and the U.S. are meeting

The dire circumstances underscore the need for immediate assistance for those impacted by Hurricane Otis, particularly for those in the United States looking to aid in the rebuilding efforts.

Beyond reaching out to President Biden, the Immigrant Rights Coalition has also communicated their plea in a letter to the Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

President Obrador is scheduled to meet with President Biden in San Francisco, California, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC), which starts on November 11.

The coalition is hopeful that President Obrador will endorse their cause to secure this protected status, arguing that the necessary conditions are met.

The group asks AMLO to join in their plea

«President Obrador should join us to secure this protection,» Gutiérrez stated, according to EFE.

He emphasized that all necessary conditions have been met and that and all that is needed is the political will to act, according to infobae.

With the cooperation of both the U.S. and Mexican governments, substantial aid could be extended to the people of Guerrero who are struggling after Hurricane Otis.
