  • After AMLO’s meeting with Biden, Mexico agreed to invest $1.5 billion in border technology.
  • There was also talk of increasing the number of work visas issued by the United States.
  • “More resilient, more efficient, and more secure borders will enhance our shared trade,” Biden and López Obrador declared in a joint official statement.

Bad news for immigrants? During his Tuesday meeting with US President Joe Biden, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed to invest $1.5 billion over the next two years to improve “smart” border technology, a move the White House says shows the cooperation between neighboring nations, something that was not achieved with the promises of the previous government to build a wall on the border and force Mexico to pay for it.

Various agreements were reached between the two countries and other topics were discussed, such as increasing the number of work visas issued by the United States, creating a bilateral working group on immigration programs for labor purposes and worker protection, and to accept more refugees.

Both leaders also pledged to continue joint patrols for Mexico and Guatemala to go after human smugglers on their shared border. The Biden administration was enthusiastic about Mexico committing funds to the border, something that former President Donald Trump failed to do for years, reported The Associated Press.

“More resilient, more efficient and more secure borders will improve our shared commerce,” Biden and López Obrador declared in a joint official statement. “We are committed like never before to completing a joint, multi-year U.S.-Mexico border infrastructure modernization plan for projects along the more than 3,000-kilometer border.”
