The visits highlight the crucial role of immigration in the 2024 presidential race. Biden and Trump both seek to capitalize on the broken immigration system for their political benefit.
Biden will travel to Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, an area that sees frequent border crossings, according to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday.
He will meet with border agents and discuss the need for a bipartisan law.
It will be his second visit to the border as president. He traveled to El Paso, Texas, in January of last year.
Biden and Trump visit the border
“He wants to make sure he puts his message out there to the American people,” Jean-Pierre said.
Trump, for his part, will head to Eagle Pass, Texas, about 325 miles (523 kilometers) from Brownsville, according to three anonymous sources interviewed by The Associated Press.
This is another sensitive point in the conflict between the state and federal governments over border security.
The increase in illegal migration to the United States is attributed to climate change, international conflicts, the economy and exploitation by cartels.
Questions about asylum
The U.S. government is expanding legal pathways for migrants, facilitating arrivals by plane with sponsors rather than on foot and without legal authorization.
Current U.S. policy allows immigrants to apply for asylum regardless of how they arrive.
The flow of migrants toward the U.S.-Mexico border has overwhelmed the capacity of a decades-outdated immigration system.
Arrests for illegal crossings fell by half in January but hit record levels in December.
Trump’s anti-immigrant stance
The flow of migrants to the U.S.-Mexico border has stressed an outdated immigration system.
Trump has escalated his anti-immigration rhetoric, repeatedly suggesting that immigrants are poisoning the blood of Americans.
Trump’s campaign team believes that Biden’s visit to the border indicates that he is on the defensive on immigration, which could affect his reelection.
Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Biden was going after Trump and is responsible for the “worst immigration crisis in history.”
Political tension escalates between Biden and Trump
Meanwhile, Biden’s team accuses House Republicans of being on the defensive, according to The Associated Press.
Trump urged Republican lawmakers to reject a bill to fund border agents and other Homeland Security authorities.
Democrats see the measure as crucial for controlling the border, while Republicans who initially backed it, now say it reflects excessive spending and an inadequate response to the immigration crisis.
The trip was first reported by The New York Times. In this context, it reveals a sharp political confrontation between the two candidates.
