Karen Julisa Rosa Madrid returned home at approximately 5:30 pm on Tuesday, December 28, without imagining the tragic way in which she would lose her life. «My daughter lived in her sister’s house in La Puente, a city in Los Angeles County,» explained Gloria Madrid, the victim’s mother.

The young 26-year-old mother was returning home from work with her youngest son Pablo Alejandro, who is six years old. Her family recalls that she «frequently forgot her keys» and that no matter how many times her sister scolded her for forgetting them, «she just laughed about it.»

“She left work at 4:30 in the afternoon, and when she arrived home with the child, it was already 5:30. Since she forgot her keys, it was easier for her to jump over the fence to try to open a window and get into the house,” said Karen Julisa’s mother about that dark and rainy afternoon.

A mother is attacked by four dogs

Karen Julisa did not jump the fence into the backyard by herself, her son also jumped over. Just on the other side, the four dogs were waiting for them. «We don’t understand what happened. Her sister-in-law and her husband, the owners of the house, had four dogs of the Italian Cane Corso breed. They kept them behind the house. They were not aggressive,» the woman said in an interview with La opinion.

Although they say they were not aggressive, the woman believes that the dogs did not recognize Karen Julisa. “She was wearing a hat and a dark jacket,” her grieving mother added, as she tried to explain how her grandson was unharmed in the attack. «The dogs scratched him and bit him on the buttock, but he managed to run, jump over the fence and ask a neighbor for help,» she said.

Help that never came

Gloria Madrid says neighbors called the police when they noticed something strange going on, but help never came. “Unfortunately it took 40 minutes to arrive. The neighbors say that they started gathering outside the house while my daughter’s screams could be heard, «she said.

“The police did not act immediately, according to the seriousness of the case. It’s not fair,» lamented the victim’s grieving mother. When the authorities arrived, Karen Julisa and Pablo Alejandro were urgently transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Identifying the mangled corpse of her daughter

The mother never imagined that her daughter’s incident was life or death. “They told me about seven in the evening. I arrived at the hospital at nine at night. At first, I didn’t think the situation was serious. I thought they were just minor injuries,» says Gloria Madrid. When she arrived at the hospital, terrible news awaited her: her daughter had died.

“They only let me see her face. The dogs tore out her skull and her body was shattered by the attack,” Karen Julisa’s mother said about the heartbreaking moment when she had to identify her daughter’s body. Her grandson survived the attack.

A little boy in shock

Pablo Alejandro was discharged and handed over to his grandmother. The little boy is in shock. Gloria says that he «already stuttered before», but since he witnessed the attack in which his mother lost her life, his speech has gotten worse. Gloria says that the little one has already started seeing a psychologist for help dealing with the trauma.

Karen Julisa came to Los Angeles two years ago and earned a living working in a winery. In Honduras, she left an older daughter, who is now 12 years old. She had applied for asylum, but was denied, so she was looking for a way to fix her immigration status.

Raising money to bury her daughter

In the midst of pain, the family is now trying to find a way to give Karen Julisa a proper burial. “At the funeral home they have told us that the cost will be between $15,000 to $17,000. For now, we are trying to raise funds, her body is kept frozen at the funeral home,” explained her mother.

Gloria Madrid is also trying to bring her oldest granddaughter to the United States on a visa so she can say goodbye to her mother. This grant is called Humanitarian Parole“. A permit just for them to come and say goodbye and obtaining it can take several weeks,” explains immigration attorney Raúl Saldaña.

The disconsolate mother says she feels boundless pain, but considers it a miracle that her grandson Pablo Alejandro survived the attack relatively unhurt. «I think my daughter gave her life for her son’s,» said Gloria Madrid.
