In a tragic turn of events, the boxing world was shocked by the news of Diego Arrúa’s death.

The renowned Argentine trainer and partner of the Argentine boxer Sabrina «Muñequita» Pérez passed away during an exhibition involving his wife.

It’s worth noting that the 58-year-old coach collapsed between the ninth and tenth rounds of the fight in which Pérez was competing.

She was facing Australian Skye Nicolson at the Fausto Gutiérrez Municipal Auditorium in Tijuana, Mexico.

Arrúa collapsed while giving instructions from the corner. Despite immediate assistance and being rushed to the nearby General Hospital, he tragically could not be revived.

The tragedy unfolded mid-fight, at a moment filled with intense expectation both for the fans at the venue and those following the bout through various media.

Sabrina «Muñequita» Pérez, a prominent figure in Argentine boxing, was delivering her utmost in the ring.

She was vying for the interim world featherweight title of the World Boxing Council. Yet, fate had a devastating twist in store.

Arrúa, an experienced coach who had guided Pérez on numerous occasions, was in her corner, providing her with support and strategies to face her opponent.

It was during that pivotal moment in the bout that Arrúa collapsed, plunging everyone into a state of shock and despair.

Efforts to save Arrúa’s life were immediate and commendable. The medical staff present at the Fausto Gutiérrez Municipal Auditorium acted swiftly.

He was rushed to the nearest General Hospital. However, despite the tireless efforts of health professionals, Diego Arrúa could not be revived.

This tragic event has deeply saddened the boxing community, as well as friends and followers of Sabrina «Muñequita» Pérez and Diego Arrúa.

The boxing world mourns the loss of a passionate and dedicated coach who made an indelible mark on the sport, guiding numerous athletes to excellence and success.

Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, confirmed the heart-wrenching news via social media:

“With profound sadness, we have learned of the sudden death of Argentine coach Diego Arrúa, who suffered a devastating heart attack during the Sabrina Pérez fight in Tijuana,” the message read.

Similarly, the DAZN network, which broadcasted the boxing match, shared their condolences on social media:

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of coach Diego Arrua following his passing,” read a post.

“Diego Arrua, Sabrina Pérez’s coach, tragically suffered a heart attack after her bout with Skye Nicolson and passed away in the hospital shortly after,” another message stated.

«Our deepest condolences to his family and close friends,» shared the boxing-specialized media outlet, IFL TV, on their Twitter account.

It’s worth noting that at the beginning of the year, Sabrina Pérez mentioned that her coach and husband Diego Arrúa was her “life partner.”

In that context, she described how her dream evolved in the world of boxing in the humble San José neighborhood. She also discussed his social work at the Villa Luzuriaga gym, as reported by Infobae.

It was the same coach who suggested she try an exhibition. «Sabrina came to my gym; I was a coach. We observed her with the team and felt she had potential, so we proposed the idea to her,» he recalled.
