A children’s hospital in Aurora, Colorado halts gender-affirming surgeries for individuals over 18.

The decision has generated strong opinions across the country.

A hospital spokesperson told The Denver Post that the decision was made by the board.

According to the spokesperson, this was after «unprecedented referrals» related to this procedure.

Children’s Hospital Colorado, in Aurora, revealed on Tuesday, July 25, that it would no longer offer transition surgeries for transgender patients over 18.

This is according to NBC News.

Rachael Fowler, a hospital spokesperson, confirmed the new policy in a press release.

She stated that, due to «unprecedented referrals,» the medical staff «made the difficult decision to no longer provide gender-affirming surgical procedures for adult patients 18 years of age and older.»

The spokesperson for Children’s Hospital Colorado spoke to The Denver Post.

She told the outlet that «children’s hospitals across the country have been directly threatened as a result of the gender-affirming care provided in their institutions.»

However, after her controversial statements, Rachael Fowler spoke to NBC News.

She told them that threats to other hospitals did not drive Children’s Hospital Colorado’s decision.

The hospital will continue to provide non-surgical gender-affirming care.

This will be done through its TRUE Center for Gender Diversity.

The TRUE Center supports both minors and patients who recently turned 18.

NBC News reported that such care includes hormone therapy, gender counseling, and nutritional services.

Ruby López is a trans woman who moved to Colorado after her transition.

She told Denver’s KUSA TV station that Children’s Hospital Colorado’s decision is «dangerous.»

«The precedent they are setting is dangerous. My fear is that other hospitals are also going to follow suit.»

«I’m starting to become a little bit nervous that it’s not as safe here as I thought,» López asserted.
