The Court of First Instance of San Juan dropped the case against Ricky Martin on Thursday after the plaintiff, his nephew Dennis Yadiel Sánchez, asked to annul the restraining order issued against the singer, according to the EFE news agency.

In a statement, the artist’s legal team explained that the case was dropped «at the request of the plaintiff, who, accompanied by his lawyer, Jessica Bernal, expressed his intention to annul the order that he himself requested,» EFE said.

According to what EFE recently pointed out, the singer’s nephew, Dennis Yadiel Sánchez, 21, alleged at the time that he had a romantic relationship with Ricky Martin for seven months and that, after the breakup, his uncle intimidated him and approached his home several times. «Ricky Martin and his legal team insisted that there was no truth to the allegations made against him, which was confirmed by the result of today’s hearing,» the statement added. After the protection order was issued, the performer of great hits such as La copa de la vida and La mordidita said on social media that his nephew’s allegations were «totally false» and that he would face the judicial process «with the responsibility” that characterizes him.

The singer participated in today’s hearing virtually and was represented by lawyers Joaquín Monserrate Matienzo, Carmelo Dávila and Harry Mansanet. Lawyer Marcos Rivera explained to EFE at the gates of the court that the first order issued against the singer was «provisional» and its duration depended on today’s hearing, when Ricky Martin’s testimony was heard. The case attracted numerous journalists, who waited outside the court despite the rain. Last week, information also emerged in some outlets that said the singer faced a possible sentence of up to 50 years in prison if he was found guilty of incest.

In this regard, his legal team reiterated today in the statement that “there were many headlines on this matter that simply did not correspond in any way to the facts. This was always a purely civil matter and, as the Court has just concluded, it was nothing more than unfortunate claims by a citizen,” the EFE agency reported.
