  • Susan Collins speaks about the opinion on Roe v. Wade.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called the US Supreme Court’s draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade «terrible» and promised that, if that ruling is ratified, the Senate will vote on a law to defend women’s access to abortion.

According to the AP, Schumer said conservative justices «lied» to the Senate during confirmation hearings when they assured senators that the case that has ensured women’s reproductive rights since 1973 was res judicata, or settled precedent. About the draft opinion that was leaked, Schumer said in a statement: «If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans.»

Senator Collins was unhappy about the court’s position, as she said on Tuesday. She said that a draft opinion from the Supreme Court that would overturn Roe v. Wade published by Politico was “completely inconsistent” with what Justice Neil Gorsuch and Justice Brett Kavanaugh “said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office.»

“If this leaked draft opinion is the final decision and this reporting is accurate, it would be completely inconsistent with what Justice Gorsuch and Justice Kavanaugh said in their hearings and in our meetings in my office. Obviously, we won’t know each Justice’s decision and reasoning until the Supreme Court officially announces its opinion in this case.» Collins said in an official statement, according to CNN. When asked by CNN reporters about a possible ‘betrayal’ by Kavanaugh, she replied; «My statement speaks for itself.» On Monday, Politico reported that it had obtained what it called a draft of a majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito.

Such a statement would nullify Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion across the country. According to CNN reports, the draft was distributed in early February. The final opinion has not been published and the votes and language may change before the opinions are formally published. Filed Under: Susan Collins Draft Roe Opinion

The authenticity of the document is not confirmed

According to CNN, the authenticity of the document has not been independently confirmed. Politico says they have authenticated the draft. A spokesman for the Supreme Court declined to comment. Under the draft, the court would overturn the Roe v. Wade, leaving the preservation of abortion rights up to individual states.

The opinion would be the most important abortion decision in decades and would transform reproductive rights for women in the United States. According to CNN reports, it appears that five judges are poised to vote to overturn Roe. Chief Justice John Roberts did not want to completely overturn Roe v. Wade, meaning he would have dissented from some of Alito’s draft opinion, the sources told CNN. Filed Under: Susan Collins Draft Roe Opinion
