A storm in Washington state leaves one missing and nearly 50,000 people without power. The authorities explained that a huge column of humidity over the Pacific that extended toward Washington and Oregon caused the heavy rains in the region.

On Tuesday, some 50,000 Washington residents were without electricity after heavy rains hit the area, generating flooding and landslides. Authorities were forced to close the main north-south highway on the West Coast.

This atmospheric river brought a lot of rain and caused serious flooding. In fact, by Monday, when the storm reached its peak, approximately 158,000 residents had been without power. Even though conditions have slightly improved, 50,000 people remain without service.

Amid inclement conditions, authorities worked to reopen the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Bellingham, Washington. However, they failed to clear the northbound road, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Jay Inslee, governor of Washington, declared a state of emergency in 14 counties in his jurisdiction due to severe weather. He also explained that the state’s Emergency Management Division, in coordination with the Washington National Guard, would respond to the community’s requirements.

Although conditions had improved by Tuesday, the National Meteorological Service (NWS) issued possible flood warnings for several rivers in western Washington. Also, several schools in the state decided to close their doors for the second day in a row due to severe weather.

So far, the most serious situation has been reported at North Bellingham, where a person is still missing after he was seen clinging to a tree in the middle of a flood. Authorities also reported that a tree fell on a car and the driver was injured.

In the city of Hamilton, northeast of Seattle, the Red Cross arranged the evacuation center in the Hamilton Baptist Church so that people could take shelter from the storm. Cars and trailers came to the evacuation center and packed the parking lot, the AP reported.

Evacuations were also ordered north of Seattle, especially in flooded commercial areas where cars could be seen submerged in water. Wind gusts up to 93 kph (58 mph) were even recorded at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The National Weather Service reported that the Skagit River at Mount Vernon would reach as low as 11 meters. Skagit County officials recalled the severe flooding in 2009, when this river overflowed, damaging several structures.
