A storm that caused a sharp drop in temperatures covered the southern plains of the United States with snow and ice, causing an emergency due to power outages. light in Texas the day after weather forced cancellation of flights and complicated traffic across much of the country, The Associated Press reported.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, initiated alternate power outages Monday morning, with thousands of people experiencing short power outages as temperatures dropped below 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 degrees Celsius) and it was hovering around -3 (25 degrees Fahrenheit) in the Houston area.

“We urge Texans to put safety first,” ERCT, which runs the state’s electrical grid, tweeted, urging residents to reduce their energy use.

ERCOT said it says the rotating outages will likely last all morning and noted that they could start until the weather emergency ends, according to CBS Austin.

More than 1.3 million customers went dark at around 3 a.m., according to poweroutage.us, a site that monitors basic supplies.

Authorities in Houston had warned people to prepare for blackouts and dangerous roads, conditions similar to what people might expect after a Category 5 hurricane.

More than a hundred crashes were reported Sunday, including a 10-car multiple collision on Interstate 45, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña tweeted.

Arturo Acevedo, chief of the Houston Police Department (HPD), reported that 134 accidents occurred in Houston over the weekend as a result of the winter storm in Texas.

Acevedo asked to avoid traveling and staying at home.

“Heavy sleet falling around the Texas Medical Center. Many crashes throughout the city, please avoid traveling and if you are on the road, slow down and get home, ”read a tweet.

Part of the southern plains was expected to be covered in ice and up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) of snow, said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Forecast Center.

“Normally, we just don’t have that much cold air this far south,” Chenard said.

The region has prepared for winter weather over the weekend. Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a disaster in the state’s 254 counties and on Saturday warned of “an extremely dangerous winter storm.”

Abbott said the historic storm “will make movement practically impossible” in the coming days. The governor called the storm “unprecedented” in state history, reported FOX News.

“What is frozen will remain frozen for a long period of time,” Abbot said, according to KWTX.

Abbott also stated that all regions of the Texas Department of Transportation are working “24 hours a day, 7 days a week” to address any challenges that arise across the state.

Also, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt and Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson activated their respective National Guard units to assist state agencies in tasks such as rescuing stranded motorists.

President Joe Biden also declared an emergency in Texas in a statement Sunday night, ordering federal assistance to be given to local and state efforts.

The declaration allows the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Disaster Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate efforts and provide assistance, equipment and resources to those affected by the storm.
