Come out of hibernation this spring with a detox cleanse for a fresh, revitalized new you! Sounds amazing right? Unfortunately, it can be hard to break out of the winter comfort food on the sofa groove. Most of us immediately think of a juice fast when we hear the phrase body cleanse but a detox is about more than what you eat — it’s about all of the toxins and stresses in your daily life.
There are also no set rules for how to go about your detox cleanse. It’s supposed to make you feel better, not tortured, so challenge yourself and expect to feel not so great at the beginning, but don’t go to such extremes you swear never to go through this again. Start simple by cleaning your pantry and getting rid of junk food, processed food and unhealthy snacks. Then head to the grocery store to pick up some nutritious detox foods.
These are items that are alkaline, high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties with plenty of water and fiber. A few examples are spinach, artichoke, asparagus, citrus, celery, beans, garlic, turmeric and green tea. Next focus on your personal products like shampoo and makeup. Ditch the old stuff and get rid of anything containing chemicals (last year’s sunscreen for example).
Do the same with your cleaning products. See you’re beginning your body cleanse with no fasting at all! Some people like to jump start their detox cleanse with a two or three-day juice fast. If you can make it, this is a great way to completely reset and lose a couple of pounds right away (it may be mostly water but it’s still motivating). Drink tons of water — lemon water is especially good for you.
alternatives for health
Working up a sweat is another way to flush out toxins. Do some intense workouts, hit the sauna or try a Bikram Yoga class. If hot yoga is a little too intense for you, room temperature yoga is just as good. According to New York City yoga teacher Witold Fitz-Simon, “In a well-rounded yoga practice, every part of the body is pushed, pulled, twisted, turned and upended” The breathing is also important, Fitz-Simons adds, “Yogic breathing helps clear out carbon dioxide from the lung tissue, stimulates the organs of digestion and can, over time, retrain the diaphragm to move freely.” Start with baby steps and you’ll have so much more energy you’ll want to keep going!
