So far, this Black Friday has been one of the most violent in recent years. A 10-year-old boy was injured by a bullet that ricocheted during a shooting at a shopping mall in Durham, North Carolina, city police said Friday.
Five other people were injured in the Durham incident
Five other people were injured during the incident, according to the Durham police. The six wounded were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews said at a news conference on Friday.
Andrews said the shooting, “occurred between two groups that knew each other,” and that, “they did not shoot indiscriminately.” One person was detained after the shooting. However, the Durham police did not provide details on whether the person faced any charges.
Tacoma Mall shooting left one seriously injured. Chaos on Black Friday
On Black Friday, a shooting in the Tacoma Mall in Washington state, that was packed with shoppers, seriously injured one person and caused panic among hundreds more who hid inside the stores. So far, no arrests have been made, the police said.
The shooting in Tacoma, south of Seattle, was reported after 7:00 p.m. in an area near the mall’s rest area, the authorities said. According to AP reports, one person shot was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
Shooting at Tacoma Mall
After the shooting, many of the shoppers at the Tacoma Mall took refuge in the premises or hid inside the stores, which closed immediately. More than 60 officers from the Tacoma, Pierce County, Lakewood, Puyallup, and Washington state attended the scene.
The police entered the mall to conduct a coordinated search, said Pierce County Sheriff Sgt. Darren Moss. The Tacoma Mall is the largest mall in the city and has more than 100 stores.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic
Fredrick Hoskins was shopping with his daughter when he heard the shots. “There was a boom, boom, boom (…) boom, boom, boom. Maybe like six shots,” Hoskins, who served in the military, told The Daily Tribune News. “It sounded like a revolver, and it looked like a single shooter.” Watch the video here.
Witnesses described the horrific scene as the crowded mall turned into chaos. “We heard a stampede running through the center of the mall and people trying to run in, and the staff here at our store immediately went and locked the doors,” Aury Moore told Fox 13.
The mayor says that the shooting was an isolated incident
Law enforcement officers came from across the county to help with the effort to find anyone who may have been related to the shooting, the sheriff’s department tweeted. In a joint statement, Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards and Deputy Mayor Keith Blocker said the shooting is believed to be an isolated incident.
The Tacoma Mall was the site of a mass murder attempt on November 20, 2005, when Dominick Maldonado, then 20, opened fire with an assault rifle, wounding seven people. He is currently serving a 163-year sentence at ADX Florence Federal Prison in Colorado. Read more here.
