A massive musical festival ended in tragedy during an artist’s performance. At least eight people were killed and several injured in stampede at the Astroworld Music Festival taking place on the Friday night, November 5, in Houston, Texas, authorities confirmed.

The AP reported that the incident occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m., during rapper Travis Scott’s performance, as reported by the Houston fire chief, Samuel Peña, in a press conference. “The crowd started pushing towards the front of the stage and that caused some panic and started causing injuries,” he added. “People began to fall, to become unconscious, and that generated more panic.”

The concert was called off after several people suffered injuries. Authorities transferred 17 people to the hospital, 11 of them in cardiac arrest, Samuel Peña said. Many others were treated in the NRG Park, where a field hospital was set up.

According to the AP report, the Houston fire chief explained that around 50,000 people attended the first day of the Astroworld music festival. He also stated that the causes of the deaths were unknown at the moment, but a coroner will investigate what happened. The fatalities had not been identified early on Saturday, November 6.

Authorities set up a reunification center at a hotel for family members who had not been able to communicate with loved ones at Astroworld, a two-day music festival scheduled for Friday and Saturday in Houston. According to the website, tickets were sold out. Following the event, Saturday’s performances were canceled.

The festival’s promoters had medical units on the premises, but when the avalanche began they were “quickly overwhelmed,” said Samuel Peña. For his part, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner called for calm and urged people not to jump to conclusions about the cause of the incident.

“I think it is very important that none of us speculate. Nobody has all the answers tonight, ” commented Troy Finner after the incident. He added that there were several rumors surrounding the event that would be investigated by the authorities.

“We are going to carry out an investigation and find out, because it is not fair to the producers, to anyone else involved, until we determine what happened, what caused the avalanche. We don’t know, but we’ll find out,” said Police Chief Troy Finner.

“It was a tragic night,” added fire chief Samuel Peña, according to Houston’s Fox 26, quoted by Fox News in the early hours of Saturday. And Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo also spoke on Khou-TV: “Our hearts are broken. People go to these events looking for a good time, an opportunity to relax, to make memories. It is not the type of event that one goes to and expects to find out that there are fatalities. Obviously this is the last place we want to be, especially after we’ve been through so much as a community. But here we have some incredibly capable law enforcement officers.”

The event was held at NRG Park. Music fans had gathered to watch performances by singer Travis Scott and other artists, Fox 26 reported, recalling that Scott also performed at the same event in 2019, when a similar but less tragic panic occurred.
