On Sunday afternoon, the death of the former senator and 1996 presidential candidate, Bob Dole, was confirmed. The veteran, died at the age of 98 while he was sleeping at home. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation reported the Republican’s death.

Various political figures have expressed their condolences and shared their feelings about the death of the Kansas legislator. Although Dole was a failed presidential candidate, people still had a deep affection for him and he’s considered an American hero.

Through a press release, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation confirmed the news of Bob Dole’s death. The man was loved and respected in the United States for his brave actions during World War II, where he was considered a war hero.

According to USA TODAY, his death was announced on Sunday morning. Dole, was 98 years old and died in his sleep. The former legislator from Kansas, became a mythical figure in the country and even younger generations would come to recognize him as a guest star on the famous animated series “The Simpsons.”

Through a press release, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation released the sad news that the 98-year-old war veteran was gone. The news has traveled the world, where several personalities have written words in his honor, honoring the life he led and the actions he carried out during the war.

“It is with heavy hearts we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep. USA TODAY recalled the last interviews given by Bob Dole where he said that when he passed he did not want to be remembered for his post-war actions, but rather to be remembered for his service to the country during the war that resulted in the loss of mobility in his right arm on the battlefield in Italy.

On social media, Mike Pence wrote about his sadness when he learned about Dole’s death. He stated that he had been a great hero during World War II, but also spoke from his personal experience about what it was like dealing with the war veteran. Pence said that he played a great role in the history of the United States and that his ideals were always going to represent an important point for the Republicans.

“Senator Bob Dole was a truly great man who lived an extraordinary life of service to America, and he will be deeply missed by all of us who had the privilege to know him. His courageous service in WWII, his heroic recovery, his service in the House and in the Senate where he served as Majority Leader, and his service on two national tickets, including the Republican nominee for president in 1996″ mentioned the former Vice President of the United States.

Mike Pince also highlighted the great legacy that Dole would be leaving. The former vice president reaffirmed his feelings about the loss of Dole and sent his condolences to the politician’s family, mainly his wife Elizabeth.

Another personality who paid his condolences on social media was Chuck Grassley who reported how he felt after receiving the news of Bob Dole’s death. The senator said that he still could not believe the news and that for him, he was not only a war hero, but also his best friend and mentor.

“Bob took me under his wing when I came to the Senate and I couldn’t have had a better senator to learn from. He was a best friend and mentor. God bless the great Bob Dole.” The senator wrote on his Twitter account where he mourned the death of his friend and attached one of the few recent photographs of the senator.
