The National Weather Service issued a wind chill warning, saying “dangerously cold wind chill could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.”
An Arctic air mass swept through the northeastern United States on Tuesday, bringing freezing and near-historic subzero temperatures that shut down schools across the region for the second time in less than a week, The Associated Press reported.
Extreme cold warnings in the US
Schools in Massachusetts’ three largest cities – Boston, Worcester and Springfield – canceled classes and said they did not want children to stay outside for long periods of time waiting for buses, according to reporting by The Sun.

Authorities make a drastic decision
Syracuse, New York, Manchester, New Hampshire, and Burlington, Vermont, were among the communities that also closed public schools. The closings came just days after many schools closed due to snow on Friday.

Coldest air in three years
“We’re getting an arctic cold front with northwest flow, rapidly shifting to a southwest flow,” he said, adding that temperatures are expected to rise to around 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.5 C) in the Boston area later in the week.
Wind chill temperatures in areas near Lake Erie and Ontario in New York State were expected to drop to minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 34 degrees Celsius) in the afternoon.
