In 1988, Salma Hayek made her television debut appearing on the soap opera New Dawn, but it was not until a year later that she made her leap to fame, showcasing her talent in the telenovela Teresa. This led her to consider moving to Hollywood. Today, Hayek is one of the best-known Mexican actresses, not only in Hollywood, but throughout the world. Desperado was the first

Desperado was Salma Hayek’s first U.S. film. However, it was not her first appearance in the cinema. In 1994, she played the role of Donna, in Road racers by director Robert Rodriguez. In Desperado, the actress played the role of Carolina, a young bar owner who is chased by a hitman who wants to end her life. With the help of El Mariachi, played by actor Antonio Banderas, she manages to escape (at least for a while) her fate.

Salma Hayek is not exactly known for her appearance in romantic comedies, but in 1997 she decided to star in the film Fools Rush In, alongside Matthew Perry, who played the character of Alex Whitman. He’s an architect who, on a trip, meets Isabel Fuentes, played by Hayek. Both characters, with opposite personalities, face an unforeseen situation that forever changes the plans that each had for their lives. That, and their cultural differences, makes them reflect on their relationship and their future.

No one writes to the colonel, a literary film

In 1999, Salma Hayek once again had one of her greatest moments of glory as an actress, when she played the role of Lobarbo Chipika in the film No one writes to the colonel, an adaptation of the novel by Gabriel García Márquez. After presenting the film in Mexico, the cast went to show it at the Cannes Film Festival and, although the producers had intended to submit it for an Academy Award in the category of Best Original Film, this could not be done.

It took three years for Salma Hayek to finally establish herself as the best actress in Mexico and the world in 2002, when she was nominated in the category of «Best Actress» at the Academy Awards for playing Frida Kahlo. Although she didn’t win, this represented a great opportunity for Hayek, who was also film’s producer and fulfilled her dream of playing the Mexican painter.

Grown Ups is one of Salma Hayek’s best comedies

In 2010, the Mexican actress starred in the movie Grown Ups, along with actors such as Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Maya Rudolph, showing that comedy is also in her repertoire. The film was so successful that a second installment was made three years later, where she again played the character of Roxanne Chase-Feder, partner of Lenny Feder (Adam Sandler).

She had the opportunity to act alongside actors like Collin Farrell and Idina Menzel in the movie Ask the dust, an American production set in the Great Depression of the 1930s. It took almost eight years for Salma Hayek to agree to play the role of Camilla Lopez, as she feared being pigeonholed into Mexican roles.

The alley of miracles

In 1995, just a few years after achieving her first successes as an actress, Hayek was cast in the Mexican film El Callejón de los Milagros. It’s a drama based on the award-winning novel of the same name by Egyptian author Naguib Mahfuz, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988. Hayek got great exposure on the international scene with this film, and was awarded the prestigious Mexican ‘Ariel’ award in the ‘Best Actress’ category.

Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over

Combining her talents for comedy and action, Salma Hayek joined the cast of the children’s film Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in 2003. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, with whom the actress had previously worked. In this film, she brought to life the character of Francesca Giggles, a technology expert at the OSS, the Organization of Super Spies where her husband, Donnagon Giggles, antagonist of previous installments, also works.

Eternals

 Eternals was one of the most anticipated films of 2021. It’s superhero film starring Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie and Richard Madden, among other renowned actors. They represent an immortal alien race in charge of protecting Earth’s population from the ‘Deviants.’ Eternals received mixed reviews, both from critics and the general public. Despite this, it managed to position itself as one of the ten highest-grossing films of the year, raking in more than $400 million dollars since its premiere.

House of Gucci was another of the most anticipated films of 2021. This thriller stars Lady Gaga and Adam Driver. In it, Salma Hayek plays Giuseppina Auriemma. This character, in real life, was the best friend of Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) and helped her plan the murder of Maurizio Gucci, a character brought to the screen by actor Adam Driver.
