Tragedy in the air. Four people died after a plane crashed west of the Visalia Municipal Airport in California, the sheriff’s office said after inspecting the accident area, according to various local media reports.

Detectives and officers from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office also went to the scene where the plane crashed near Highway 99 in Visalia. The aircraft left Visalia Municipal Airport at 6.37 p.m., Sgt. Jesse Cox said. About four minutes passed between the takeoff and the first call to 911.

Rescuers were slow to locate the wreckage due to the dense fog in the area. Photos of the wreckage showed a destroyed cabin and debris in front of an orchard near the Visalia water reclamation facility on 288th Avenue, the Visalia Times Delta reported.

“It was dark. At that time, there was much more fog. We circled around the area with personnel until we found [the remains].” Officers said ambulances and firefighters arrived at the tragic scene shortly after the accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board was en route to the area and is already investigating the crash of a Beech V35 plane in Visalia. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to join the investigation on Sunday, the Visalia Times Delta said.

According to the flight logs, an aircraft (N7933M) left the Visalia airport at 6.37 p.m. A publicly accessible FAA database states that the 1966 Beech plane is registered to David Chelini of Sacramento.

Detectives have not identified any of the four victims who died when the plane crashed in California. Details about the accident will have to wait until transportation safety officials complete their investigation, which could take weeks.

ABC 30 reported that officials from multiple agencies, including the Visalia police and firefighters, responded to the accident, although the plane did not catch on fire after it crashed near the airport on Saturday.

This recent event is the second fatal plane crash in Tulare County this year. In June, a Van’s RV-6 plane plummeted shortly after leaving the Porterville airport, the Visalia Times Delta recalled. The pilot, Lt. Col. Billy “Taz” Sullivan of the 144th Fighter Wing, was killed in the impact, the newspaper added.
