At least three people died in the Philippines after a powerful typhoon that flooded villages, ripped off roofs, toppled trees and left the central and southern provinces of the country without power. More than 300,000 residents fled for safety before it struck, authorities said on Friday.

Typhoon Rai weakened slightly after making landfall on the country’s southeast coast on Thursday, but remained deadly and destructive, with sustained winds of 96 miles per hour and gusts of up to 133 mph. It went up the west coast towards the western province of Palawan, before exiting the South China Sea, according to meteorologists.

Authorities were assessing the extent of the damage and casualties caused by one of the most powerful typhoons to hit the country in recent years. They noted that their efforts were being hampered by widespread power outages, power failures, and roads clogged with fallen trees and debris.

Witnesses described high winds that ripped away roofs and toppled trees. Severe flooding trapped residents in their homes, including on the banks of overflowing rivers, the news agency reported. The Associated Press.
