- The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority made 800 retired subway operators and drivers a surprising offer.
- Retired NYC subway employees could earn $35,000 if they return to work.
- The MTA has over 600 positions open for bus drivers as well as train operators and conductors.
Due to a lack of skilled labor, the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority is asking retired employees to consider coming back to work for a bonus of $35,000. However, not many have accepted the offer.
The pandemic has made workplaces in the US challenging. These issues have led to a lack of train operators and bus drivers in New York. Companies need to address this problem to keep things running smoothly. One solution is to give retirees a generous offer to return to work.
$35,000 bonus to attract retirees
The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) sent offers to 800 former employees with experience in operating trains and buses. The offer includes a $35,000 payment made after three months for those who can return to their previous jobs. Unfortunately, the generous proposal has not been met with enthusiasm. Only 20 retired employees have accepted so far.
“Not enough crews”
The MTA not only manages New York City’s subway and buses but also serves as the country’s largest transportation agency. The MTA currently has over 600 positions that need to be filled by bus drivers as well as train operators and conductors.
According to The New York Times, the executive director of the MTA’s Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee, Lisa Daglian said, “It’s a big problem. For there to be enough service, you need to have enough crews.”
Incentives for returning employees
The MTA has 3,195 train operators, 2,946 drivers, and 11,850 bus drivers, which are apparently not enough. So, the agency contacted 800 of its former employees. These retired workers were offered $35,000 if they are willing to go back and train to get their skills updated.
New Jersey Transit did the same thing, offering a bonus of up to $6,000 to returning drivers. However, this incentive has not been enough to increase the number of transit workers in the area. Therefore, delayed transportation services and supply chains continue to be a problem.
Unusual worker shortage
Amalgamated Transit Union’s international president, John Costa, said that he has, “never seen this kind of shortage … affecting communities. If we have a shortage, … it takes longer to get somewhere.”
Businesses throughout the country that are in need of truck drivers are also proposing higher salaries (up to $200,000 a year) and signing bonuses up to $30,000.
Employment package for drivers
During the holidays, truckers are in high demand. Companies such as Los Angeles–based McLane, Miami-based Sysco, and Houston-based Texas TransEastern are offering truck drivers more than $100,000 a year.
The employment package also includes a signing bonus of $10,000–$20,000. EFE added that the benefits are good—getting to driving a new truck, receiving a pension plan, and working with better schedules.
The best employment package in the industry
The NY Journal reported that US Xpress, based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, currently has the best employment package. It offers truck drivers an annual salary of $200,000 and a signing bonus of $30,000.
Gio Marz, trucker and director of operations for the Atlas Marine freight forwarding company, said that, “it is a very good time to be a truck driver and you have to take advantage of it.” In fact, according to Indeed, pay in this field of work has increased by 50% in the last year alone.
Right now, the United States is experiencing a transportation crisis. According to the American Trucking Association, the industry needs 80,000 truckers after the pandemic pushed many to abandon work and driving schools had to suspend training programs.
The situation is so complicated that the docks of Los Angeles or Long Beach are crowded with merchandise and have neither workers to unload nor carriers to transport the products. Other cities, such as San Francisco, Houston, Miami, and New York City, are in the same situation. Right now, getting truckers is urgent, so attractive job offers arise.
