The state of Missouri in the United States executed Ernest Johnson on Tuesday, a man who was sentenced to death for murdering three supermarket workers during a robbery in 1994, the Efe agency reported.

Johnson, a 61-year-old African-American, was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m. local time (11:11 p.m. GMT) after receiving a lethal injection at Bonne Terre Penitentiary, south of St. Louis, according to the Missouri Department of Corrections.

In silence, he spoke words to his family members when the process began. Her breathing hitched, her cheeks puffed out, and then she swallowed hard. Within seconds, all movement stopped, according to The Associated Press.

In a written statement before he was executed, Johnson said he regretted it and had “remorse for what I do.” Said he loved her family and friends and thanked those who prayed for him. A spokeswoman for the department of corrections said four family members representing the three victims were present.

Johnson’s witnesses included family members and his attorney. No family member spoke after the execution. Corrections spokeswoman Karen Pojmann said 59 protesters gathered at the edge of the prison grounds.

It was the first execution in Missouri since May 2020 and only the seventh in the United States this year. The state went ahead with Johnson’s execution despite claims by his attorney that doing so would violate the Eighth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits executing people with intellectual disabilities. Before receiving the lethal injection, Johnson was served one last meal of his choice consisting of two double cheeseburgers with bacon, onion rings, a pizza and two strawberry shakes.

Johnson’s was the first execution in Missouri so far this year and the seventh in the entire country. Since the Supreme Court restored the death penalty in 1976, 1,536 people have been executed in the United States, 91 of them in Missouri. Filed Under: Missouri Execution.
