The law called Gasoline Tax Refund Act 2022 was introduced last week in the state senate after gas prices in the state topped $4.36 a gallon, up from $2.90 a gallon just 12 months ago, AAA reported.

Also, the average price of diesel in the state right now is $5.51 per gallon, up from $3.01 a year ago. The Democrat-proposed bill seeks to use $1.3 million of anticipated excess revenue from North Carolina’s General Fund to pay for the gasoline rebate.

The refund would be sent as a check or debit card no later than October 1, 2022, according to WRAL. “A person is eligible for a gasoline tax refund under this section if, as of March 31, 2022, he or she is a resident of North Carolina, is over the age of 18, and has a valid North Carolina driver’s license.”

“The purpose of this law is to provide a gas tax rebate to help families pay for the high costs of gasoline and increased food prices associated with rising fuel costs” forerunners of the project shared.
