MIAMI (AP) – Venezuelan starter Pablo López set a major league record by striking out the first nine batters he faced at the start of a game and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 7-4 on Sunday. One day after the Braves lost star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. for the remainder of the season due to a knee injury, Atlanta’s offense had no answer for Lopez’s dominance.

Lopez struck out Ehire Adrianza, Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies in the first inning; then he dispatched Austin Riley, Orlando Arcia, and Dansby Swanson in the second; each of his first six victims swung. In the third inning, Cuban Guillermo Heredia stared at the third strike, Kevan Smith swung and Ian Anderson struck out looking to end the third.

López (5 -5) had 30 strikes in his first 35 pitches. The Venezuelan started the day with 102 strikeouts in 95 innings of his 18 starts this season.

For the Braves, the Venezuelans Adrianza 4-0 and Arcia 4-1 with an RBI. The Panamanian Johan Camargo 1-0. Dominican Abraham Almonte 1-0 and Cuban Heredia 4-0. For the Marlins, Venezuelans Jesús Aguilar 5-2 with a run scored and four RBIs, Miguel Rojas 4-3 with an RBI, Sandy León 4-0 with an RBI, and López 3-0. The Dominicans Starling Marte 4-1 with two runs scored, Jesus Sanchez 4-3 with two runs scored and Magneuris Sierra 1-0.
