Nashville International Airport (BNA) reported in an official statement that, on Sunday morning just after 7 am, a person carrying a firearm entered the baggage claim area of the airport and threatened to harm himself.
The gun later went off and the suspect holding it was injured, according to NewsChannel 5. At that time, the person was taken into custody by local authorities and is now receiving medical treatment, according to BNA.
Suspect is in custody
After shooting himself, the suspect was taken into custody by local police. The authorities did not detail how serious the man’s injuries were, but they did confirm that there were no other people harmed in this morning’s incident at the airport.
“Our Department of Public Safety responded quickly to the scene. This is an ongoing investigation. Our BNA DPS team will continue to provide a safe environment for all travelers and employees,” said a Nashville International Airport spokesperson.
Neither the local authorities nor the airport spokesperson detailed whether people had to be evacuated during the incident. However, later the activities in the air transport facilities were operating normally. They say the shooting is still under investigation.
This is not the only armed incident in Nashville, Tennessee, so far this year. Just a month ago, a shooting was reported at a Waffle House located in this same city. On that occasion, two people were injured by gunfire and one of them died.
