  • Luis Guzmán caused a strange accident while driving while intoxicated and his girlfriend Ángela Navarro died
  • According to the authorities, the victim flew out of Guzmán’s truck
  • The man did not stop to help the girl, who died when she hit the concrete

Luis Guzmán was arrested in Houston, Texas, accused of having caused a drunk accident in which a young woman died. The agents of the Division of Vehicular Crimes of the Houston Police Department (HPD) arrested the man for the crime of driving under the influence of alcohol and failing to help an injured person.

Guzmán, 32, is a repeat offender, as despite his age he faces a third charge for the crime of driving under the influence (DWI) arrested by the HPD. However, the man had never before caused an accident in which a person was killed. The dead woman is Angela Navarro, who was Luis Guzmán’s girlfriend.

Luis Guzmán faces at least five years in jail, since the Texas State Penal Code details that when a person is detained for the third time for a DWI, the crime ceases to be an administrative offense to become a crime that is punishable by imprisonment for whoever is found guilty in a trial.

Guzmán will face his criminal proceedings before Judge DaSean Jones of the 180th Criminal District Court in Harris County. The defendant continues to be held in the Harris County Jail. The documents of the case reveal a strange accident, in which perhaps the man pushed his girlfriend Angela Navarro out of his truck on the highway.

If agents from HPD’s Vehicle Crimes Division were able to confirm that Luis Guzmán himself pushed the victim out of his truck, the man could face other, more serious charges. The details of the case, consulted by MundoHispánico in Texas, they reveal one of the strangest incidents in Houston’s criminal annals.

According to the report of the HPD detectives, on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at 1:40 in the morning, in the center lanes of the I-10 highway, the surprised motorists suddenly saw how a truck was going to At full speed, a woman was flying out of the right-hand passenger door.

According to the testimonies of the motorists, the body hit the pavement of the I-10 highway, heading west, in the area known as The Heights and almost at the exit with TC Jester street. Some motorists were unable to stop their march and beat the woman, but these people were not charged by HPD with any charges.

The drivers of those cars got out in shock to try to help the woman, whom they identified as a Hispanic girl in her early 20s. One of the motorists, trained in nursing, offered first aid to help Angela Navarro, who was lying on the road while Luis Guzmán’s truck drove away from the scene.

While one of the motorists was helping the girl, other drivers called the HPD emergency number to report what had just happened on the road. At the scene, in addition to the patrol cars, paramedics from the Houston Fire Department (HFD) arrived to assist the girl.

When HFD paramedics arrived at the scene, they could no longer do anything for the girl and she was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries she sustained when she hit the concrete on the road. Then, the presence of the agents of the Division of Vehicular Crimes of the HPD was requested to investigate the case.

Due to the seriousness of the case, the agents decided to close the road, for at least five hours, to investigate the incident. Among the investigations of the HPD detectives, the agents collected the testimonies of all the motorists who stopped at the scene.

The people interviewed agreed in their testimony about the description of the truck in which the girl was traveling and the sequence of how the events occurred. HPD’s Crimes Division retrieved images from traffic video cameras posted along the road to obtain details of the incident involving Luis Guzmán.

Based on these videos, the agents managed to recover the brutal images of the moment in which the girl fell towards the road. Another version details that when the girl got out of the truck, the same vehicle that Luis Guzmán was driving made a maneuver and hit her. That second version is also being investigated by the authorities.

Then, surprisingly, something happened that the detectives of the HPD Vehicle Crimes Division did not expect, as they saw the truck they were looking for arrive again at the scene of the incident. The agents approached the driver who showed clear signs of alcohol intoxication and was arrested at the scene.

When reviewing Luis Guzmán’s background, agents from HPD’s Vehicle Crimes Division discovered that there were already two previous arrests for DWI in the man’s driving record. Judges in Texas are especially harsh when a person reaches their third arrest for that crime.

The investigation of the case revealed that Guzmán and the girl, moments before she was thrown out of the truck, were having a fight for unknown reasons. Now the authorities are concentrating on knowing if the girl fell accidentally, or if the man pushed her. The girl was the mother of a two-year-old baby.

The case against Luis Guzmán could be aggravated, since the girl, allegedly, could also have been under the influence of alcohol, although she was not yet of legal age in Texas to consume alcoholic beverages. As of this writing, the autopsy result has not been released to authorities.

In addition, the Harris County Prosecutor’s Office is already investigating, from the excess of alcohol in the man and perhaps in the girl, where the couple was getting drunk to the point that the man overdid himself with drinks. The bar they have been at may face criminal charges for serving alcohol to a customer and allowing him to drive, a source revealed.

If the agents manage to verify that Luis Guzmán pushed the girl out of his truck in the middle of the brawl, the man could face a sentence of homicide for intoxication that carries a sentence of up to 20 years in prison in a prison of the Department of Criminal Justice of Texas (TDCJ).

Prosecutor Sean Teare, of the Harris County Prosecutor’s Division of Vehicle Crimes, explained that the greater Houston area is the dishonorable first place in all of Texas for DWI arrests and many of which are carried out by Hispanics.

According to Sean Teare, in February 2021 alone the Harris County Prosecutor’s Vehicle Crimes Division, the office he directs, had to process 150 cases of people detained for DWI. The number of cases, in relation to the same month last year, grew because many people were confined in their homes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, according to prosecutor Teare, the cases could increase now that the spring and summer months begin when it is warmer and the authorities have lifted curfew restrictions so that people stay at home due to the coronavirus pandemic .
