At 4:06 in the morning of that Monday, August 23, Camilo Ramírez, a 25-year-old father of a family, was walking with his dog on the sidewalk of East Iron Street, between South 2nd Street and North Front Street, when suddenly they shot him repeatedly. Both the man and his pet were wounded by the shots on the sidewalk.

Neighbors alarmed by the noise of the shots called the SPD emergency number to report the shooting. At the time the events occurred, the authorities did not know what had happened, since the only report they had was that the residents of the area had only heard the gunshots.

When the first SPD patrols arrived on the scene, they found Camilo Ramírez and his dog wounded by gunshots. The man was rushed to a hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, the man was taken to the neighboring city of Wichita, 90 miles to the south, to be treated by doctors.

Those images were the first that allowed SPD agents to identify Juan Doroteo Morales and Jaime Leos Jr. as those allegedly responsible for the attack on Camilo Ramírez. The SPD requested that the agents of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), which came from Topeka.

On the same afternoon of that Monday, August 23, 2021, the combined force of SPD agents, with the support of the KBI state detectives, already knew who the alleged attackers of Cornelio Ramírez were. Meanwhile, the wounded man was still struggling between life and death at the Wichita hospital. The dog had already died at the scene of the shooting.

At 8:30 p.m. on Monday, August 23, the agents raided the house of Jaime Leos Jr., 24, on East Jewell Street, who had already been identified as one of the two alleged shooters against Camilo. Ramirez. Officers found 80 grams of powdered methamphetamine in the home, as well as evidence linking him to the shooting.

The arrest of Jaime Leos Jr. allowed SPD and KBI investigators to identify Juan Doroteo Morales, 34, as the second suspect in the shooting that woke up alarmed neighbors. The agents discovered that Morales used the aliases of Juan Dotola Morales, Juan Doytael Morales and Juan Datola Morales.
