The JBS company suspends part of its meat production in North America, specifically in the United States and Canada, due to a cyberattack, as reported through a statement released on Tuesday.

The attack was detected by the company JBS, one of the largest meat processors in the world, last Sunday. However, it was not until this Tuesday that they were forced to suspend their operations at their plants in the United States and Canada.

The Australian company indicated in the statement that the attack affected “some of the servers that support IT systems in North America and Australia”, although it did not specify if it was a “ransomware” such as the cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline pipeline network in May.

Although they had to temporarily stop production, JBS indicated that the company’s backup servers were not affected by the attack. They also added that their technical staff was working to restore the systems as soon as possible.

Could it cause a shortage?

Stopping the meat production of one of the most important companies in this area in the country could cause supply problems in the United States and Canada, and even in other countries to which they export meat products.

For example, the JBS plant in Canada distributes its production to more than 20 countries around the world, according to the company on its website. Another serious consequence of a possible ‘absence’ of meat on the counters would be the inevitable increase in prices.

The company has 9 beef, 5 pork, and 26 chicken processing plants in the United States; while in Canada it only has one beef processing plant, EFE reported.

JBS is a high-impact company in the meat sector, since they have operations in 15 countries and sell their products in a hundred. In North America, for example, they are responsible for up to 20% of meat production, according to industry data.

Other cyberattacks

Last May, Colonial Pipeline was the victim of a “ransomware” attack, with hackers locking down computer systems until they pay a ransom. This stopped the work of the company that regularly transports up to 2.5 million barrels per day of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel throughout the United States.

The gasoline shortage caused chaos in states like North Carolina and led to a rise in gasoline prices in the United States, was attributed to a group of hackers called Darkside and caused alarm in the US government.
