A Hispanic teenager from Iowa was killed in a hit-and-run incident just days before her quinceañera, according to police reports. The girl was on her way home from school when the fatal accident occurred, reported The New York Post.

On Thursday, April 28, the tragedy devastated a Hispanic family after the freshman student at Des Moines East High School, 14-year-old Ema Cárdenas was run over at 3:45 pm by an SUV, according to People en Español.

According to the Des Moines Register, the driver hit the Emma Cardenas and left her fatally injured on the side of the road before fleeing. Cárdenas was taken to a nearby hospital where she soon died from her injuries.

Police said they later found the SUV suspected of hitting the Hispanic teen at a home less than a mile from the crash site. On Friday, April 29, police announced the arrest of Terra Jean Flipping, 38, of Des Moines, The Associated Press reported.

According to the AP, police say Flipping allegedly stopped after the crash, got out of the vehicle and looked at the dying Hispanic teen before fleeing. The suspect has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

“We are still looking for a few more witnesses on this because we don’t have a real clear picture as of why the 14-year-old girl was in the roadway,” Sgt. Paul Parizek told People. “She had just got out of school four blocks away,” he said.

Ema Cárdenas was about to celebrate her quinceañera where she was expected to wear a beautiful dress made by her mother. Now the teenager will be buried in the dress. “She was so excited. Emerald green and gold, which are her favorite colors,” mother Anna Campos told television station KCCI.

“Now I have to tell those members of the family that instead of giving invitations to her party, I have to give invitations to her funeral,” said the devastated mother who very humbly said that she wanted to forgive the woman who had killed her daughter. “I just want answers. Like, how can she… what was her state of mind leaving somebody just there on the side of the road,” she said, adding: “I ask you to pray for her when you pray for our family.”
