Wind rages, the light goes out in a burning California

Meanwhile, the fires in California they keep wreaking havoc.

New wildfires swept through dry California land during a scorching holiday weekend, in which more than 200 people were rescued by air and the state’s largest power company cut off 172,000 customers in an attempt to prevent its lines electrical and other equipment will cause more fires, reports AP.

Typically, the worst part of California’s fire season begins around this time, but the state has already set a record with 2 million acres (809,000 hectares) burned this year. The previous record was reached just two years ago and included the deadliest wildfire in state history, the Camp Fire, which swept through the town of Paradise and killed 85 people.

That fire started on Pacific Gas & Electric power lines. The liability of billions of dollars in claims for that and other fires led to the bankruptcy of the company. To prevent new fires and severance costs, PG&E last year began making preventive shutdowns when conditions are exceptionally dangerous.

This is the current case in Northern California, where strong, dry winds were expected through Wednesday. PG&E, which was criticized for its handling of the blackouts last year, said it learned from previous problems “and this year there will be smaller, shorter and smarter interventions for customers.”

Two of the three largest fires in state history were burning in the San Francisco Bay area. More than 14,000 firefighters were fighting the flames there and at two dozen other outbreaks across the state.

Fire risk was also high in Southern California, where there were new fires in Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. The US Forest Service decided to close the eight national forests in the region and close the camping areas throughout the state.

“The wildfire situation throughout California is dangerous and needs to be taken seriously,” said Randy Moore, a regional Forest Service official. “The declared fires are behaving extremely well, new fires are likely to start and the weather conditions worsen, and we simply don’t have enough resources to fully combat and contain all the fires.”

Lynne Tolmachoff, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said it was “disturbing” to have broken a record for burned area, as September or October are typically the worst fire months because the vegetation is dry. and strong winds are more common.

Although the two large San Francisco Bay fires were largely contained after burning for three weeks, firefighters were having trouble stopping other large outbreaks before the winds picked up. Evacuation orders were extended to more mountain towns on Monday as the Creek Fire, the largest, moved through the Sierra National Forest in central California.

On Monday night, a military helicopter unsuccessfully tried to land near Lake Edison to rescue people trapped in the fire, the Fresno Fire Department said on Twitter.

The department indicated that a new attempt would be made using night vision goggles.

New California record: 2 million acres burned this year

Joseph Rosamond, a Chinook helicopter pilot, said there was poor visibility and the winds had been gaining strength on his three flights to the area, in an operation that began Saturday night and lasted through Sunday. His team relied on night goggles to find a landing zone near a pier, where the flames reached about 15 meters (50 feet) from the aircraft.

In the first transfer, which filled the two helicopters, priority was given to the wounded, women and children, he said.

California has suffered 900 wildfires since August 15, many of them started by an intense series of lightning strikes in mid-August. Eight people have died and more than 3,300 structures have been destroyed.
