A great hair day is sometimes hard to come by. You’re running around, you’re sweating, you’re dealing with some bad-hair-day weather (ugh humidity), and you probably don’t have much free time to make your mane look perfect. So when you do manage to score a great blow-out you really need to make it last. And yes, you can make your blow-out last for days, even if you are working out, showering and chasing after your children. All you need are some smart styling techniques, great products and clever tips to make your blowout last long. And the longer you can make your blowout last, the less frequently you’ll need to dry it, which means you’ll have healthier hair root-to-tip.

According to SELF, “heat causes damage. Blow-drying causes a “flash drying” effect that not only removes the surface moisture but also removes water that is bound to the hair, which is called water of hydration. The effect of this flash drying is that the cuticles become dry, rigid and brittle. When the hair flexes, the pressure causes the cuticles to crack. Combing hair with this degree of cuticle cracking causes significant breakage.” While we’re not suggesting you completely ditch your blow-dryer—let’s get real—it is wise to make your blowout last as long as possible so you can tend to hair less frequently and minimize damage. Here are 7 ways to make your blow-out last and look gorgeous.

1. Eliminate Grease

One of the first obstacles you’ll encounter when trying to make a blowout last is dealing with grease at your roots. Some of us can go an entire week without washing out hair and it will still look clean and fresh; others have naturally greasy hair that looks dirty after 2 hours. If you wake up and see that your hair is starting to look a little dirty, first try a volumizing spray, which will help lift your roots without getting rid of that natural shine.

When the spray isn’t cutting it, you can turn to your new BFF dry shampoo. According to Good Housekeeping, dry shampoo “isn’t actually shampoo (there’s no sudsing involved), but rather a spray or powder that cleanses hair via oil absorbers like starch and volumizes via ingredients like silica.” This magic spray adds body to hair, absorbs grease so hair looks and smells clean, and it is an awesome tool to help make a blowout last.

2. Use Fewer Products Before You Blow-Dry

It might seem like more is more when it comes to hair products, after all each product claims to provide different benefits and gorgeous results. But the more products you pile on the more it will weigh your hair down and ultimately make your hair look dirty. As Shape reports, according to Drybar founder Alli Webb, “products leave behind build-up that causes hair to lose its shape and fall flat…the fewer products you use, the longer you’ll be able to stretch your style.”

3. The Scrunchie is Your Friend

One of the fastest ways to ruin a good blowout is to sleep on it for 8 hours (if you’re lucky) and wake up with a serious case of unruly bed-head. Invest in an old-school scrunchie, yes like the ones you wore in the 80s, and pull your hair back in a loose pony while you rest. The scrunchie is more forgiving so it doesn’t create a crease in your hair, and it also doesn’t pull out strands as you toss and turn. You’ll wake up with your blowout in tact, ready to tackle your day.

4. Don’t Forget the Shower Cap

Of course you’ll need to shower, but if you don’t want to mess up your hair when you do, invest in a shower cap to prevent moisture from reaching your tresses as you rinse. And make sure you don’t remove the shower cap right away after you finish your shower. There is still moisture in the air in the shower and bathroom even after the water is shut off, so leave your shower cap on to prevent humidity from getting to your hair as you dry off.

5. Choose Silk if you Want Silky Smooth Hair

Another sneaky culprit of ruining a blowout is your pillowcase. Certain fabrics can actually tug at your hair as you rest your head, causing breakage when you aren’t paying attention. A silk pillowcase is best because it is smooth and doesn’t catch loose hairs as you move. If you don’t want to change your bedding, a silk headscarf works just as well. Loosely pull hair back and then wrap the silk scarf around your head, making sure to cover your roots.

6. Absorb Sweat to Keep Hair Clean

If you workout often, we applaud you. Regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and your hair should not get in the way of that. But haven’t we all had that moment where we feel like we have to choose between a sweat session or re-doing our hair? If you get a good blowout and you use the right accessories, you don’t have to choose.

Simply wear a sweat-absorbing headband while you workout to keep the moisture from your face away from your hairline and your strands. In addition, put hair in a loose, high bun to keep it off your neck. When you are done working out wash your face, removing all sweat, and then let your hair down and take the headband off. You can use dry shampoo and blow-dry the roots as needed to add body and remove any moisture that made it through, but you should be good to go.

7. It’s all About the Right Brush

Turns out the brush you use to blow-dry your hair matters more than you might realize. A brush such as this one both lifts hair as you dry it, and also absorbs excess moisture thanks to the bristles that function almost like a towel. So you’ll get the style you want, and will remove all wetness ensuring that your style lasts. And every time to need to touch up or brush your hair, you’ll maintain that style and keep hair completely dry so your blowout lasts.
