Cleaning shades and blinds is a task that should be done at least once a month to avoid dust accumulation and damage to your window treatments. It will also brighten your home. Of course, the cleaning method that you adopt must be appropriate to the type of blinds that you have. Here are six simple tips for spotless blinds and shades.

Vacuum cleaner

Your vacuum cleaner is, perhaps, one of the most effective ways to remove as much dust as possible from shades and blinds. Even better it can be used on virtually all materials. The vacuum will get into the deepest corners where dust builds up, but it’s important to use a soft extension to avoid unwanted scratches or dents.

Cotton gloves, microfiber fabrics and dryer sheets are an effective option for removing dust from plastic or wood blinds, as long as they are made of a soft, grease-free material. One way to get a deep clean is to start cleaning from the center to the ends of the blinds. This way, it is easier to remove the dust and prevent it from accumulating in the corners.

White vinegar and soap to clean blinds

This tip applies only to plastic or metal blinds. Prepare a mixture with equal parts of warm water and white vinegar, then add a few drops of dish soap. With a sponge, delicately apply this mixture on each of the slats and rinse with warm water. Lastly, dry with a microfiber towel before opening the blinds.

In all cases, it is important to read the instructions for your blinds to confirm which materials or products should not be used for cleaning. Although bleach is normally recommended for plastic and aluminum shades. In this case, it is recommended that you disassemble the blinds and fill the bathtub with cold water and a maximum of two cups of liquid bleach. Then let them sit in this mixture for 10 minutes. Always remember to ventilate the space well.

Wood cleaner

If your blinds are made of wood, it is best to start the cleaning process with a microfiber cloth or other material with a soft texture to avoid scratching. Then apply wood cleaner. One way to do this is to apply the wood cleaning product directly to a dry cloth and clean the front and back, handling the blinds carefully to prevent them from cracking.

Uninstall and clean

Although some blinds are easy to clean, the most common thing is to uninstall them at least once a month to verify that they are in good condition and that the cleaning has been effective. Whether you use a mixture of vinegar and water, baking soda with water and vinegar, or just warm water — one option is to submerge the blinds in your bathtub and dry them with a microfiber cloth.
