Elizabeth Vizcaya was motivated to carry out this work mainly because she herself has experienced the needs that these children lack.

Vizcaya is the mother of two special children, “one of my sons has mild autism and the other has hearing loss,” said Vizcaya.

He also added that in the Hispanic community there is a great lack of information in addition to the lack of resources.

Vizcaya shared with us that there are many people who do not know how to treat or care for this type of children and that even many of them have unfortunately suffered from school abuse.

When the Vizcaya pandemic began, I called school of her son and there they informed her that the hours would be approximately 6 hours without a break and with a mask, which worried her a lot, because she says that for special children it is extremely difficult to comply with the mandatory use of the mask, especially on long hours.

Therefore, Vizcaya decided to open the doors of her home to special Hispanic children or those with learning difficulties in order to give them a hand so they can get ahead with their studies.

Both Vizcaya and her husband share essential information with other Hispanic teachers or parents who need this knowledge, such as sensory activities, therapy centers, diets, and day-to-day experiences that are essential for these children.

“The Hispanic community needs it,” said Vizcaya, adding that one of the biggest difficulties that parents have faced, especially, has been the language barrier.

He also added that they provide information from therapists, psychologists and pediatricians so that they can get good assistance.

The invitation that Vizcaya proposes is for all those Hispanic parents who are going through a similar situation, since she wants to let them know that they are not alone and that it is very important that as a Hispanic community we help each other.

People who need more information can contact her through the number 404-918-0335 or by email habitatfamilychildcare@gmail.com and Vizcaya will provide them with the information they need.

Just as she is helping the Hispanic community, she also asks it for any kind of donations that they would like to make for the children, which would be of great help.

Materials could include blackboards, computers and children’s games since children tend to have motor difficulties and in this way seek better emotional development.

Atlanta’s Latino heart seeks to regain its heartbeat, damaged by COVID

“La Buford”, the Hispanic heart of the Atlanta metropolitan area, seeks to regain its “heartbeat” after the coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis it has generated hit this vibrant community, one of the most diverse in Georgia.

The area had one of the highest rates of COVID-19 infection, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health, and the consequences of this have been felt in the hundreds of small businesses that have seen a significant reduction in their clientele in recent months.

And it is that the virus has not only impacted the health of Hispanics, who constitute one of the groups most affected by this disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but also in the pockets of the Latino consumers by losing many of their jobs or receiving fewer hours of work.

Although this crisis has already caused the closure of some of the businesses, there is a feeling of optimism that better days will come to “La Buford”, as the community is known among Hispanics in a part of Buford Highway, which extends along an avenue of more than 30 miles and that crosses the counties of Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett.
