  • A Southern California grandfather says a woman accused him of kidnapping her own grandson because they have different skin tones.
  • Abel Mata says he was told that someone had reported the kidnapping of a child.

Abel Mata, a grandfather from Southern California, says a woman accused him of kidnapping her own grandson because they have different skin tones.

It happened Sunday afternoon when Torrance police officers responded to a call regarding a suspicious incident.

A possible kidnapping involving an older Hispanic man walking with a small child.

Abel Mata, who was born in Mexico and moved to the United States when he was 5 years old, is a loving grandfather who spends as much time as possible with his two-year-old grandson, Milo Walker. And this Sunday they were enjoying themselves together when the police showed up outside his home in Torrance and asked about a little boy.

Abel Mata says he was surprised when he realized that they were looking for him. They told him that someone had reported that a “Latino had kidnapped a white baby.”

It seems that in all this mess there was an old woman, with blond hair and white complexion, who yelled at Mata that he was a kidnapper, who was trying to take the child.

The lady was in possession of a large sheathed knife, police later said, although no one knows what its purpose was.

The officers spoke with Abel Mata and, immediately, they realized that the Mexican grandfather was not trying to harm the child, but on the contrary, he was exercising his “grandfather” with all love until the agents arrived.

And Abel has his opinion on what actually happened. “They judged me based on the color of my skin and the color of my grandson’s skin,” says Mata.

“We’ve lived in Southern California our entire lives and I’ve seen my dad experience racism because of his skin color and appearance, but never to that point,” said Athena, Mata’s daughter.

“It is painful. Very painful ”, says the grandfather.

Torrance police, for their part, say it’s unclear if the person who called the police was the woman with the knife.

But the Mexican did not remain calm and later asked the police what had happened to the woman.

Surprisingly, they told him that since he never drew the knife and did not threaten anyone with it, there was nothing they could do.

“I was further informed that carrying a sword in public is not illegal. No action will be taken against this lady. According to the Torrance police, this was a misguided kidnapping call and no report was filed, ”Mata said.

And her daughter, Athena, is also not silent. “My father was arrested today because someone called the police for ‘kidnapping’ Milo. My son, who doesn’t even let my dad leave the room without yelling, who only wants his “keypa” every time he’s around, who screams and cries even if my dad goes out to use the bathroom. THIS SHIT HAS TO STOP !!!!!!! This woman ONLY thought my dad kidnapped Milo because my dad is brown and my son is white. She was walking with a SAMURAI SWORD and the police focused on my dad, holding my son who clearly loves him. She had a gun in her hand and they didn’t blink. I hate this world. “You were walking with a baby and she was walking with a sword and you are the one who gets in trouble …”, he says in his facebook.

Racism in Torrance, CA
August 30, 2020
I was putting things in Karen’s (my wife) car when Torrance approached me better. They approached me because an older white lady holding a samurai sword had called them to report a Mexican man (Abel Mata) holding a white baby (Milo Walker). I had to prove that I was not abducting this white baby because of my different skin color than my grandson’s. I’m so angry! When Athena Mata (Milo’s mom and daughter) came home, she started crying because of the racism that I just experienced. Torrance police responded with two police cars to call a Mexican holding a white baby. As soon as I started recording with my iphone, the policemen got into their cars and sped up as you can see in the video.

I contacted the Torrance police to see what action had been taken with the lady of the samurai sword. They informed me that because the sword was rinsed and she did not threaten anyone with it, the whole thing fell off. I was further informed that carrying a sword in public is not illegal. No action will be taken against this lady. According to Torrance Police, this was a misguided kidnapping call and no report was filed.
My daughter Miranda summoned the incident today saying: “You were walking with a baby and she was walking with a sword and you are the one who gets in trouble,” Mata posted on his Facebook.
