- A Georgia sheriff left his barracks to give away turkeys.
- The project was to celebrate Thanksgiving in advance.
- More than 3,000 families benefited from the initiative.
This Monday was a special one for the residents of Gwinnett County, Georgia. More than 3,000 families of all races benefited, thanks to a novel initiative by the local Sheriff’s Office. At the end of the day, they celebrated one of the most historic events in the entire state.
The sheriff gave away more than 80,000 pounds of food, including turkeys and other products from a basic goods basket so that the beneficiaries can celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday, one of the most important holidays in the US.
“We are making history”
MundoHispánico spoke with Gwinnett Sheriff Keybo Taylor, who took over the job this year. The official stated that he was happy with the community event. “We are pleased to have been a blessing to so many people in need,” he said.
MH asked Taylor what he thought of his county’s current situation. Until last year, talking about immigrants in Gwinnett was synonymous with arrest and deportation. That is history now since Taylor became sheriff.
“Treated with dignity and respect”
Asked about the arrests of people driving without a license, which is one of the most common reasons people are issued tickets there, the sheriff said his officers must continue to do their job of complying with state laws. However, he clarified that they do it differently now.
“Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and for this reason, we decided to end the 287 (g) program and thus stop deportations, which directly benefits our Hispanic brothers,” Taylor assured MundoHispánico.
Best used resources
Taylor assured people that the resources will be better managed during his administration. Instead of wasting time and taxpayer funds on deportations, he decided to focus on other aspects of greater relevance, such as mental health care.
Also, he prefers to fight more against human smuggling and drug trafficking, among other issues affecting his constituents. So far, the sheriff has made great strides to fulfill every one of his campaign promises.
