GREAT NEWS! For years doctors and researchers have been trying to find a cure for this terrible disease, so it’s really refreshing to learn about an experimental treatment that managed to eliminate cancer in all of the participants in clinical trial.
Dostarlimab is an experimental cancer drug that, for the first time in history, may have completely cured cancer in every patient who tried it. Of course, this is still a very small clinical trial, but it may also be a huge boon to the medical world and to the millions of people who suffer from cancer.
Experimental drug eliminates cancer in all trial participants
The drug trial took place at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York. It was administered to 18 patients with rectal cancer, who received the medication every three weeks for a period of six months.
The results: their cancer disappeared! All patients in the clinical trial underwent various types of medical studies such as physical examinations, endoscopy, tomography and magnetic resonance imaging to conclude that the disease was no longer detectable in their bodies.
“I think this is the first time that this has happened in the history of cancer,” Luis A. Diaz, who published the surprising and encouraging results of his study in the New England Journal of Medicine, told the New York Times. The results have shocked everyone. For example, Alan Venook, who is a colorectal cancer specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, commented on the “unprecedented” results.
The cancer in all the treated patients, who were selected for the GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical study, was at similar stages, as the disease was quite advanced in the rectum but had not yet spread to other organs. They all knew that if the treatment did not work they would have to undergo chemotherapy, radiotherapy and even surgery. Dostarlimab changed their lives.
Results: The cancer vanished!
The trial patients also knew that conventional treatments could cause bowel, urinary, and sexual dysfunction, including the need for a colostomy bag. However, the drug allowed them to avoid all of those traumatic side-effects. After a series of medical tests, they concluded that the tumors had completely disappeared.
“There were a lot of happy tears,” said Andrea Cercek, an oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a co-author of the study, when they learned the results, and even more so after learning that none of the patients had any side effects.
It is still an experimental treatment
Can it cure all types of cancer? In all the different patients? The truth is that the trial size is still too small to draw conclusions, but they have shown that dostarlimab, a drug produced in the laboratory, is capable of unmasking cancer cells, so that the body can identify and destroy them.
Each dose of dostarlimab would have a value of about $11,000 so to complete the full six-month treatment would cost approximately $110,000, reported La Razón de España. Filed under: Experimental treatment manages to eliminate cancer from all participants.
