Emergency food benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), traditionally known as food stamps, have been extended through the end of December in Texas, authorities reported this week.

According to reports, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission received federal approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to extend the maximum allowable amount of food stamp benefits based on family size. Also, all SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allowances.

December’s emergency appropriations are in addition to the more than $5.1 billion in benefits previously provided to Texans since April 2020. Fox 7 explained that, administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to eligible low-income families and individuals in that state. Texans in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, via the YourTexasBenefits.com or the Your Texas Benefits mobile app to manage them.

SNAP is a federal program, but each state manages the claimants’ benefits. So food stamps must be requested in the state in which the beneficiary resides. Also, applicants have to meet certain requirements to get them, such as income and resource limits.

Anyone thinking of applying for the federal food program can contact their local SNAP office for more information. People who receive food stamp benefits could benefit from obtaining greater savings through such coupons.

The USDA, which administers the SNAP program, began providing more money in October 2021. The additional funding is part of a continued relief due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Sun explained.

The cost adjustment represents the first time the plan has changed since it was first introduced in 1975. The average SNAP benefit increased by $36.24 per person, per month. Amounts may vary depending on the state where the beneficiary applies.

The Sun reported that Amazon offers $5.99 per month for the Amazon Prime membership for customers who receive Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) or benefits from Medicaid, the federal and state health insurance program for low-income individuals.

According to The Sun, Amazon will verify that you are currently receiving the benefits. The regular cost of a Prime membership is $12.99 per month, plus tax. So subscribing this way means saving $7 a month that will remain in your pocket. The Amazon Prime plan includes access to streaming content and free two-day shipping for online orders.

The YMCA often offers discounts to low-income individuals and families. If you qualify for food stamps, you may also qualify for a discounted YMCA membership. Such discounts, The Sun explained, can be applied to programs like youth sports, babysitting, and camps.

During any period of your membership, you may be asked to provide proof of income to keep your rate adjusted. Also, if you are looking for a fun activity, museums across the country offer discounts for people who receive SNAP or food stamp benefits. Most venues only require you to show your card so you can enjoy the discounts or, in some cases, even free admission.
