Authorities of the Canary Islands in Spain activated the alert for volcanic risk on the island of La Palma after more than 4,200 earthquakes were recorded in recent days, however, scientists warned that over time the earthquakes will increase.

Fears of a possible eruption of the volcano that is on the island are increasing since, added to the telluric movements, there is a deformation of the ground which indicates that there is restless magma under the ground. The island’s volcano last erupted 50 years ago.

Earthquakes in the Canary Islands activate alarm

The strongest tremor of those registered in the swarm of earthquakes that have occurred in recent days has had a magnitude of 3.4, according to the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan), reported The Daily Mail.

“An intensification of the type of seismic activity in the coming days cannot be ruled out,” the institute said. Likewise, the Spanish government office in the Atlantic archipelago said that the situation “could change rapidly in the short term,” but emphasized that “there is no clear evidence to suggest that an eruption is imminent.”

They issue a yellow alert

Canary Islands authorities raised the alert level from green to yellow, the second of four levels, in certain areas around the volcano. The yellow alert level means that civil protection officials must inform the public “to take precautions before a possible volcanic eruption”, in accordance with Pevolca’s emergency plan.

In the last hours, Involcan has revealed its calculations on the magma that presses under the soil of La Palma and that has already raised the ground ten centimeters in some parts of the island: it is 11 million cubic meters.

Earthquakes have been shallow

Involcan said that all of the earthquakes had been shallow and the “significant ground deformation” was the result of “a small volume” of new magma flowing into the reservoir below the volcano. “Without a doubt, the current seismic swarm represents a significant change in the activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano and is related to a process of magmatic intrusion under the island of La Palma,” he said.

The president of the Cabildo de La Palma, Mariano Hernández Zapata, indicated that a rapid evolution with a “short-term” outcome was not ruled out. “We live on a volcanic island and an eruption is one of the options that can be given,” said Hernández, reported The country.

Meanwhile, a strong earthquake destroyed houses, killed at least three people and injured dozens on Thursday in southwest China’s Sichuan province. Rescue work was underway after the 6.0 magnitude earthquake on the Ritcher scale.

According to the official Xinhua news agency, the quake struck at 4:33 a.m. on Thursday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) in Luxian, a county in the Chinese city of Luzhou. State broadcaster CCTV said about 88 people were injured, three of them seriously. He also reported that some 35 houses had collapsed. The Associated Press.

The epicenter of the quake was about 200 kilometers (120 miles) southeast of Chengdu, the provincial capital. The Xinhua News Agency reported that collapsed walls and houses could be seen on the way to the epicenter of the earthquake, and that power had been cut off in much of the city of Jiaming. Local media showed groups of residents cleaning up the rubble.

Rescuers were going door-to-door in heavy rain looking for people in damaged houses in Fuji city to transfer them to temporary shelters, Xinhua said. Workers distributed moon cakes, a traditional gift for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival week, and other food in a shelter.

Lai Jianrong, a Fuji resident, told Xinhua that she felt a slight tremor around 4 a.m. and ran barefoot in her nightgown when the tremors became intense. “Some bricks fell off the wall and I didn’t dare to go inside again,” the agency said, quoting her.

More than 3,200 people have been transferred to 79 shelters, CCTV said. Western China is regularly affected by earthquakes. A 7.9-magnitude earthquake in May 2008 killed nearly 90,000 people in Sichuan, many of them in collapsed schools and other poorly constructed buildings.
