For her part, Lucy Jones, former USGS chief scientist for the Los Angeles area, said through her account Twitter that the number of people who felt the earthquake depended clearly on the depth of the earthquake.

“How you feel in a small earthquake like this morning depends on how close you are to it. Because it is 10 miles deep, everyone is at least 10 miles from it. The closer it is, the sharper the movement will be, ”Jones said.

Taiwan is near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. More than 100 people were killed in an earthquake in southern Taiwan in 2016. Hualien, a very touristy place, was rocked in 2018 by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake, which caused 17 deaths and nearly 300 injuries.

In September 1999, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake killed about 2,400 people, in the worst natural disaster in the island’s history. A 6.2 earthquake was registered in December 2020, but there were no injuries or significant damage. To see the VIDEO, click here.

The volcano Old Summit It continues to erupt, but this Saturday it also generated a magnitude 4.9 earthquake on the Spanish Atlantic island of La Palma. This has been the most intense earthquake since the volcano woke up on September 19 and since an inclement seismic swarm began that has not stopped.

This Saturday, October 23, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) from Spain detected a 4.9 magnitude earth movement at a depth of 38 kilometers. But it has not been the only one, because at least 30 more tremors have followed, of which a dozen are greater than magnitude 3.

On September 19, the Cumbre Vieja volcano woke up. It has been active for more than a month and not only has it devoured some 2,200 buildings, but it has destroyed some 900 hectares of land, according to the records of the Copernicus satellite system.

Its effect has been devastating. The authorities have had to urgently evict some 7,000 people, many families have lost their homes and jobs. In addition, there are hundreds of citizens who are still under alert now not only because of the threat of the volcano, but also because of the intense seismic activity that it has generated.

According to the revised calculations of the ING of Spain, this Saturday, October 23 at 3:34:49 (local time) an earthquake was registered southwest of VILLA DE MAZO that was of magnitude 4.9 on the Richter seismological scale with an epicenter at 38 kilometers deep.

After the movement, the main cone of the volcano partially collapsed, reported the Instituto Volcanológico de Canarias. Additionally, in the hours that followed the earthquake, to the west of the secondary cone, an emission of runoffs suffered several lava overflows.

As if the lava and ash that erupt from an active volcano were not enough, the earthquakes have generated changes in the flows, which keeps the authorities on alert. Before the intense shaking, the Cabildo of La Palma He said that “the laundry that is in the La Laguna neighborhood has not advanced in the last 24 hours.”

After the seismic movement, some spills were generated that widened this flow, precisely the one that most worries the authorities due to its proximity to the buildings and especially to the crops of the town of La Laguna, until now the most threatened in La Palma.
