  • A strong 5.8 magnitude earthquake left at least one dead and several injured on an island in Greece.
  • At least 9 aftershocks were recorded, the strongest was magnitude 4.6.
  • The earthquake damaged houses and churches and caused rockslides.

One person died and at least nine were injured after a strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 struck the island of Crete, in southern Greece, on Monday, according to authorities. The quake damaged homes and churches and triggered rockslides near the country’s fourth-largest city.

The strong earthquake caused people to flee to the streets of the city of Heraklion and schools were evacuated. Repeated aftershocks rocked the area and local media reported damage in villages near the epicenter.

The telluric movement occurred at 9:17 a.m. local time (0617 GMT), according to the Institute of Geodynamics of Athens, with an epicenter 246 kilometers (153 miles) south-southeast of the Greek capital, Athens, reported The Associated Press.

“This is not a event That happened without warning. We have seen activity in this region for several months. This was a strong earthquake, it was not under the sea but underground and it affected populated areas, ”said seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos on the Greek state broadcaster ERT.

Agencies say the earthquake was 6.0

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center and the United States Geological Survey gave a preliminary magnitude of 6.0, with an epicenter seven kilometers (four miles) north of the town of Thrapsano. The Geodynamic Institute of Athens said it was 5.8. It is common for different seismological institutes to give different magnitudes for an earthquake in the first hours and days after an event.

Greece’s Ministry of Civil Protection and Climate Crisis said that according to reports from local authorities, one person died and nine others were injured. Details of the circumstances of the death and injuries were not immediately available. to see the video click HERE.

SHAKING MORE THAN 1 HOUR? The experts detect a prolonged earthquake of magnitude 4.2 that lasted more than an hour, although that is not the most impressive, but it happened nothing more and nothing less than on Mars.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) reported that on September 18, the InSight lander recorded an earthquake on Mars for almost an hour and a half, making it the longest ever detected.

The mission on Mars reported that the movement was of a magnitude of 4.2 degrees, which also makes it the most intense earthquake on record. The previous record was held by a 3.7 earthquake that was detected in 2019, until three large tremors struck in less than a month.

According to NASA, this is the third major earthquake that the InSight mission was able to record in just the last month. The other two major earthquakes occurred on August 25 and were of magnitude 4.2 and 4.1, reported in a official statement.

NASA scientists are still investigating the September 18 earthquake to determine what caused the movement and in which direction the seismic waves traveled, although they reported that it occurred far from where InSight had detected the other two large earthquakes.

Meanwhile, on the August 25 quakes, NASA said: “The magnitude 4.2 event occurred about 5,280 miles (8,500 kilometers) from InSight; while the 4.1 magnitude was also much closer to the lander, only about 575 miles (925 kilometers) away. ”

Experts indicated that the earthquakes on August 25 were completely different. “The magnitude 4.2 earthquake was dominated by slow, low-frequency vibrations, while fast, high-frequency vibrations characterized the magnitude 4.1 earthquake,” they noted.

“The magnitude 4.1 earthquake was also much closer to the lander, only about 575 miles (925 kilometers) away” from the Insight module, according to NASA.

Studying earthquakes on Mars

The InSight mission is studying earthquakes to learn more about Mars. Seismic waves vary as they travel through a planet’s crust, mantle, and core, all of which provide researchers with information about what is below the surface.

InSight is part of NASA’s Discovery program, administered by the agency’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Lockheed Martin Space in Denver built the InSight spacecraft, including the cruise stage and lander, and supports the spacecraft’s operations for the mission, ”they explain about the mission.
