Biden replacement Ginsburg. Joe Biden on Sunday criticized President Donald Trump and top Senate Republicans for trying to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and urged more senators to support a pair of Republican colleagues who oppose the election season fever.

The extraordinary televised appeal of the Democratic presidential candidate to Republican senators reflected the fierce maneuvers that followed the Ginsburg death age 87 on Friday, The Associated Press reported.

Ginsburg’s passing reversed a campaign that, until then, had focused on Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, the nation’s economic collapse and the race riots that have fueled protests in U.S. cities.

“I am not naive. I’m not talking to President Trump, who will do what he wants, I’m not talking to (Republican Majority Leader in the Senate) Mitch McConnell who will do what he wants, and he does, I talk to those Republicans out there, to the Republican senators who deep down know what is good for the country (…) and not only what is good for the party, ”said Biden, according to the Efe news agency.

Biden also said Republicans should allow voters to decide who will be the next president and allow that person to make the nomination to replace Ginsburg, reported the New York Post.

“They are the ones that the Constitution provided should decide who has the power to make this appointment. This quote is not about the past.

“It’s about the future and the people of this nation,” added Biden.

“And the people of this nation are choosing their future right now as they vote. Jamming this nomination in the Senate is just an exercise of pure political power and I don’t think the people of this nation will accept it, ”the Democrat continued.

On Friday progressive Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away at the age of 87 leaving a vacancy on the Supreme Court, which is made up of nine justices, of whom so far five were conservatives and four progressives.

Trump already announced this Saturday his intention to name his replacement next week and that it would possibly be a woman, after Mitch McConnell promised that he would put the president’s nominee to a vote in the hemicycle.

In this regard, Biden, who gave a speech from the Philadelphia Constitutional Center, urged Republican legislators in the Upper House to follow their consciences.

“Don’t vote to confirm anyone nominated under these circumstances created by Trump and Senator McConnell, don’t go there,” he pleaded.

Biden criticized McConnell for blocking the 2016 Senate vote for Judge Merrick Garland, nominated by then-President Barack Obama, months before that year’s election.

“At that time, McConnell came up with a rule based on fiction that I believed anyway that there should be no election year court nomination. It’s ridiculous, “he said.

Biden, who was Obama’s vice president, considered that even if Trump presents a candidate for the Supreme Court, the Upper House should not act “until the American people elect the next president, the next Congress and the next Senate.”

Biden also addressed US voters and linked the coronavirus pandemic, until now the great issue of the electoral campaign, with the vacancy in the Supreme Court.

“As I speak we are surpassing 200 thousand deaths from this virus, tens of millions of Americans are unemployed, health care in this country is at stake in this court and now in an abrupt political movement, this president and the Republican leader have decided to force a lifetime appointment to the US Supreme Court in the Senate. It’s the last thing we need now, ”he lamented.

He recalled that “Donald Trump is before the Supreme Court trying to snatch health coverage from tens of thousands of families; snatch peace of mind from more than 100 million Americans with prior illnesses. If insurance succeeds again, they will discriminate or remove all coverage from people with previous illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, cancer and many other problems ”.

“And perhaps, the cruelest thing of all is that if Trump succeeds (they will remove the coverage) due to complications from COVID-19,” he said.

The Democrat was referring to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, which the Trump administration wants to eliminate.

During these years, Republicans have filed numerous lawsuits in court against various aspects of the legislation.

Also, Biden said that if he is elected president in the elections, he will nominate an African-American woman, as Ginsburg’s successor, and that he will always do so after consulting with Democrats and Republicans.
